Paper-cutting artist featured at ESAL
The East Suburban Artists League will welcome Ted Bolha as its featured speaker on Sept. 4.
Bolha has been creating intricate, hand-cut art pieces for more than two decades, and in recent years has focused almost entirely on abstract paper-cutting.
Bolha will showcase his process during a live demonstration at the league’s next meeting, 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at Christ’s Lutheran Church, 5330 Old Logan Ferry Road in Murrysville, in the church’s lower-level meeting room.
Ladies Society meeting
The Plum Area Ladies Society will hold its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Plum Community Center.
The featured speaker will be Kelly Hughes from the Foster Love Project, who will discuss the group’s mission and operations.
The service project will be to provide items for donation to foster children and parents, including baby bibs, sipping cups, board books for infants, baby wipes, pajamas, crib sheets, twin sheets, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant and menstrual products including pads and tampons.
The community center is at 499 Center New Texas Road in Plum.
In addition, the September Ladies’ Day Out will be 12-3 p.m. Sept. 26, with a lunch at Mohan’s on Saltsburg Road in Penn Hills. Annual $25 dues may be paid at the meeting.

Plum AARP meeting
Plum AARP will hold its September meeting at noon Sept. 9 at Unity Community Church Cafe. The program will be Dennis Smalley, performing music from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s. Dues of $15 are payable at the meeting.
Plum AARP is a social and service organization open to residents of Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville and the surrounding communities. Newcomers are welcome at regular meetings, which are at noon at the church on the second Tuesday of each month except July.
Most meetings feature free cake and coffee/tea/water, as well as a speaker or entertainment. The club holds a Christmas party, May luncheon, and August social for its members, as well as two hot dog/chips/cake lunches over the year.
There is also an opportunity to schedule single-day or overnight trips through the ThomasTours representative who attends the meetings.

Jazz festival
The Monroeville Jazz Festival will take place Aug. 30 from 12-8 p.m. in the Tall Trees Amphitheater at Monroeville’s Community Park West, 2447 Tilbrook Road.
The festival headliner will be Pittsburgh jazz singer Etta Cox at 6:30 p.m. Other performers include:

• 1 p.m.: Urban Impact Youth Jazz
• 1:30 p.m.: Brian Edwards Excursion
• 2:30 p.m.: Urban Impact Youth Jazz

East End Kids auditions
The East End Kidsteen song and dance ensemble will be holding auditions for new members from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 at DeStella Dance Studio in Export. Auditions are open to youth entering grades 6-12.
Each applicant should prepare 32 bars of an up-tempo, Broadway-style song and 32 bars of a ballad, and wear comfortable, movement-friendly clothes and shoes.

Junior Achievement seeks nominations
Junior Achievement of Western PA is once again seeking nominations for 18 young leaders who are using their voices to create change.
The 18 Under Eighteen program, now in its fifth year, was launched to recognize young people who are making a difference, not just in sports or academics, but also within their communities.
The program, presented by the EQT Foundation, so far has honored 72 teens across 10 counties in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginio. Their contributions include medical research, founding nonprofits, advocating for marginalized communities, developing innovative solutions to real-world problems and more.
Honorees are selected by a diverse panel of judges from the corporate, nonprofit, community and educational sectors. Those chosen will receive:
• Professional leadership training taught by White House-recognized community leader and brand expert BeNeca Griffin;
• Personal media assets and recognition, including a personal billboard courtesy of Lamar Advertising;
• Networking, mentoring, and scholarship opportunities;
• Gifts from JA partners.
Nominations are open through Sept. 30, and honorees will be announced Jan. 6. The awards celebration will take place Feb. 3 at Acrisure Stadium.
Parents, teachers, mentors and peers are welcome to nominate individuals 18 or younger who are making an impact and reside in JA’s 56-county footprint.

Chorus seeks new members
The Monroeville Chorus is seeking new members. Auditions are not necessary.
The group rehearses at 6 p.m. Tuesday evenings at Hillcrest church, 1522 James St. in Monroeville, and performs throughout the east suburbs.

Food pantry
The Garden City Food Pantry will host a food distribution day from 9-11 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. Sept. 11 at 500 Laurel Drive in Monroeville.
Distributions will take place on the second Thursday of each month. Additional distribution days will be Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11.

Fall festival
The Monroeville Foundation’s Fall Festival will take place Sept. 13 at Monroeville Community Park West. There is no cost to attend, and the day will include food, live music, entertainment, a classic car cruise, a 5K run and 3K walk and more.

Day of Peace planned
Monroeville Rotary’s International Day of Peace celebration be held Sept. 20 at Monroeville Community Park West, 2399 Tilbrook Road.
The all-ages event begins at 11 a.m. and will be held in the Peace Garden, or a nearby pavilion if it’s raining. Music, dance performances and comments by local community leaders will be featured. The program will highlight the ethnic, racial and cultural richness of the community, with a focus on promoting peace through connection and understanding.
All proceeds will go toward Rotary’s scholarship program, youth services and local organizations that work to reduce food insecurity in the community.

Food distribution
A free food distribution day will take place each month at Gateway High School.
Distribution will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the high school, 3000 Gateway Campus Blvd. in Monroeville. Attendees can line up through the school parking lot.
Identification is not required.
The distributions provide food aid to nearly 800 families each month, according to organizer and school board member Valerie Warning.
Association of University People
The Association of University People invites potential new members to join them at an event.
The association invites singles aged 50 and older, who are four-year college graduates, to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include picnics, monthly dinners, a book group and meetups at local concerts and wineries.
