Fall book sale

The Monroeville Public Library will host a fall book sale Sept. 19 and 20.

It will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days at the library, 4000 Gateway Campus Boulevard in Monroeville.

Purchase a bag for $15 and fill it with as many items as will fit. Individual books will also be available to purchase.

Heritage Day

Monroeville Historical Society will host their annual Heritage Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 27 at the McGinley and McCully Homes at 2381 McGinley Road.

Activities will include guided tours and interactive demonstrations, pony rides, farm animals, pumpkin painting, scarecrow craft, vendor booths and refreshments. Many activities are free, but some will require a small charge.

Monroeville Arts Council concert

The Monroeville Arts Council will host vocalist Judi Figel and saxophonist Kenny Blake on Sept. 21 as part of its 2025 concert series.

It will be from 4-6 p.m. in the auditorium at the Community College of Allegheny County’s Boyce Campus, 595 Beatty Road in Monroeville.

Concerts will take place Sept. 21, Oct. 19 and Dec. 14. Admission is free.

Worship in the Garden

Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church will host “Worship in the Garden” from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 28 on the church courtyard, 1622 James St.

The evening will include worship and praise, staged lighting, a vocal performance by artist and organizer Curtis Franciscus and light refreshments. This all-ages event is open to the public; guests are asked to bring lawn chairs. There is no charge to attend but donations are accepted.

Super Bingo

Divine Mercy Academy will host a “Super Bingo” from 9-11:30 a.m. Oct. 25 at the academy’s Lourdes Center, 245 Azalea Drive in Monroeville.

Symphony East season kicks off

Symphony East will kick off its 64th season on Sept. 15 with a 1 p.m. performance by the Johnstown Symphony Brass Quintet, which includes two trumpets, a French horn, trombone and tuba.

The program will cross a variety of musical genres including classical, jazz, pop and marches.

It will be at the Lamplighter Restaurant, 6566 Route 22 in Salem. The cost is $15 for adults, and reservations are not required.

9/11 Day of Remembrance

Turtle Creek Valley Rotary will hold a 9/11 Day of Remembrance at noon on Sept. 12 at the Haymaker Village Plaza, 4500 Broadway Blvd., Monroeville. This event is open to the public, and serves as a way to honor those who lost their lives on the 24th anniversary of the attack.

The program will begin inside Papa Rocks Pizza Pub. Hosted by Rotary President Mike Wargo, events will include pizza, the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem, a review of events leading up to 9/11 and a chronology of the tragic day.

Turtle Creek Mayor Adam Forgie will speak about his 9/11 experience as a veteran. Following indoor events, a 21-gun salute, playing of taps and a ceremonial flag folding will be held outside. There is unlimited attendance for the outdoor portion.

Junior Achievement seeks nominations

Junior Achievement of Western PA is once again seeking nominations for 18 young leaders who are using their voices to create change.

The 18 Under Eighteen program, now in its fifth year, was launched to recognize young people who are making a difference, not just in sports or academics, but also within their communities.

The program, presented by the EQT Foundation, so far has honored 72 teens across 10 counties in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Their contributions include medical research, founding nonprofits, advocating for marginalized communities, developing innovative solutions to real-world problems and more.

Honorees are selected by a diverse panel of judges from the corporate, nonprofit, community and educational sectors. Those chosen will receive:

•Professional leadership training taught by White House-recognized community leader and brand expert BeNeca Griffin;

•Personal media assets and recognition, including a personal billboard courtesy of Lamar Advertising;

•Networking, mentoring, and scholarship opportunities;

•Gifts from JA partners.

Nominations are open through Sept. 30, and honorees will be announced Jan. 6. The awards celebration will take place Feb. 3 at Acrisure Stadium.

Parents, teachers, mentors and peers are welcome to nominate individuals 18 or younger who are making an impact and reside in JA’s 56-county footprint.

Food pantry

The Garden City Food Pantry will host a food distribution day from 9-11 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. Sept. 11 at 500 Laurel Drive in Monroeville.

Distributions will take place on the second Thursday of each month. Additional distribution days will be Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11.

Fall festival

The Monroeville Foundation’s Fall Festival will take place Sept. 13 at Monroeville Community Park West. There is no cost to attend, and the day will include food, live music, entertainment, a classic car cruise, a 5K run and 3K walk and more.

Day of Peace planned

Monroeville Rotary’s International Day of Peace celebration be held Sept. 20 at Monroeville Community Park West, 2399 Tilbrook Road.

The all-ages event begins at 11 a.m. and will be held in the Peace Garden, or a nearby pavilion if it’s raining. Music, dance performances and comments by local community leaders will be featured. The program will highlight the ethnic, racial and cultural richness of the community, with a focus on promoting peace through connection and understanding.

All proceeds will go toward Rotary’s scholarship program, youth services and local organizations that work to reduce food insecurity in the community.

Food distribution

A free food distribution day will take place each month at Gateway High School.

Distribution will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the high school, 3000 Gateway Campus Blvd. in Monroeville. Attendees can line up through the school parking lot.

Identification is not required.

The distributions provide food aid to nearly 800 families each month, according to organizer and school board member Valerie Warning.

Association of University People

The Association of University People invites potential new members to join them at an event.

The association invites singles aged 50 and older, who are four-year college graduates, to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include picnics, monthly dinners, a book group and meetups at local concerts and wineries.
