PPG to host annual butterfly count

The 25th annual North American Butterfly Count will take place from 9-11:30 a.m. July 12 in Monroeville.

The event is organized by the North American Butterfly Association. Anyone interested in participating can meet at the PPG Monroeville Business & Technology Center at 440 College Park Drive. Registration is required by going to Bit.ly/3G5gqW8.

A limited number of butterfly nets are available, but participants should bring their own if possible, along with light-colored clothing and a hat.

The results are recorded with the association and will contribute to butterfly research.

Vehicle charging station opens

A new electric vehicle charging station in Monroeville is among a half-dozen such stations recently opened by state officials.

An EVgo station is now open at the Penn Place Shopping Plaza, 4145 Route 22.

Additional stations in the region include the Sheetz at 251 Curry Hollow Road in Pleasant Hills, Edgewood Towne Center at 1775 South Braddock Ave. in Edgewood, and the Longhorn Steakhouse at McCandless Crossing, 9150 Covenant Ave. in McCandless.

Quilt show

The Quilt Company East’s “Under the Sun” quilt guild show will be held at Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish, 245 Azalea Drive in Monroeville.

It will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 17-18, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19.

Rotary 5K canceled

Monroeville Rotary’s 5K Run/Walk for Peace has been canceled for Sept. 20.

The International Day of Peace celebration will still be held at Monroeville Community Park West, located at 2399 Tilbrook Road.

The all-ages event will be held in the Peace Garden, or a nearby pavilion if it’s raining.

Day of Giving

The Pittsburgh Foundation will host a Day of Giving event for the Garden City Food Pantry in Monroeville.

Online donations will be accepted at PittsburghGives.org from 8 a.m. to midnight Aug. 5. All donations of $25 and more will be eligible for additional incentive funds from the foundation.

Block parties

Monroeville’s Recreation & Parks Department will host block parties this summer where residents can relax, enjoy food and talk with their local officials.

They will take place July 17 at Overlook Park, 522 Thomas St., with Ward 1 Councilman Joe Hyzy; and Aug. 12 at Monroeville Community Park West’s Pavilion 3, 2399 Tilbrook Road, with Ward 3 Councilman Bob Stevenson.

Each event will include a craft for kids, food from the Gridiots BBQ food truck and more.

The parties will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

Food distribution

A free food distribution day will take place each month at Gateway High School.

Distribution will be from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the high school, 3000 Gateway Campus Blvd. in Monroeville. Attendees can line up through the school parking lot.

Identification is not required.

The distributions provide food aid to nearly 800 families each month, according to organizer and school board member Valerie Warning.

School district seeks sponsorships

Gateway School District is seeking sponsors for numerous facilities throughout the district.

Convention center events

The following events are scheduled at the Monroeville Convention Center, 209 Mall Plaza Blvd.:

Food pantry

The Garden City Food Pantry will host a food distribution day from 6-7 p.m. July 10 at 500 Laurel Drive in Monroeville.

Distributions will take place on the second Thursday of each month. Additional distribution days will be Aug. 14, Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11.

Association of University People

The Association of University People invites potential new members to join them at an event.

The association invites singles aged 50 and older, who are four-year college graduates, to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include picnics, monthly dinners, a book group and meetups at local concerts and wineries.
