Jazz festival

The Monroeville Jazz Festival will take place Aug. 30 from 12-8 p.m. in the Tall Trees Amphitheater at Monroeville’s Community Park West, 2447 Tilbrook Road.

The festival headliner will be Pittsburgh jazz singer Etta Cox at 6:30 p.m. Other performers include:

• 12 p.m.: Calvin Stemley and the Stemtecs

• 1 p.m.: Urban Impact Youth Jazz

• 1:30 p.m.: Brian Edwards Excursion

• 2:30 p.m.: Urban Impact Youth Jazz

• 3 p.m.: Tony Campbell

• 4:15 p.m.: Center of Life Youth Jazz

• 4:45 p.m.: Dwayne Fulton

• 6 p.m.: Center of Life Youth Jazz

The festival also will include food trucks, local vendors and more.

Attendees can bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the music. No umbrellas or tents are permitted.

Picnic in the Park

Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church will host its annual worship and “Picnic in the Park” at 10:15 a.m. Aug. 24.

It will be at Pioneer Park, 245 Young Drive in Monroeville. Food, drinks and plasticware will be provided. Guests are encouraged to bring a dessert to share. There will be a casual service, horseshoes, volleyball and other games.

Library Fun Fest planned

The Monroeville Public Library, 4000 Gateway Campus Blvd., will host a Fun Fest beginning at noon on Aug. 23.

The event will include games, music, food, community and exhibitor booths, petting zoo, balloon artists, inflatable rides, hair tinsel, magician, DJ, ceramic painting and the Gateway High School Robotics Club.

Elephant and Piggie, the main characters from the children’s book series by Mo Willems, will be making special appearances from 1-3 p.m.

Broadway show, auditions

East End Kids, currently in its 35th year, will be performing its last Bravo Broadway summer show at 11 a.m. Aug. 23 at the American Banana Split Festival in Latrobe.

The teen song and dance ensemble will be holding auditions for new members from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 at DeStella Dance Studio in Export. Auditions are open to youth entering grades 6-12.

Each applicant should prepare 32 bars of an up-tempo, Broadway-style song and 32 bars of a ballad, and wear comfortable, movement-friendly clothes and shoes.

Chorus seeks new members

The Monroeville Chorus is seeking new members. Auditions are not necessary.

The group rehearses at 6 p.m. Tuesday evenings at Hillcrest church, 1522 James St. in Monroeville, and performs throughout the east suburbs.

Blood drive

Food pantry

The Garden City Food Pantry will host a food distribution day from 9-11 a.m. and 6-7 p.m. Sept. 11 at 500 Laurel Drive in Monroeville.

Distributions will take place on the second Thursday of each month. Additional distribution days will be Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11.

Fall festival

The Monroeville Foundation’s Fall Festival will take place Sept. 13 at Monroeville Community Park West. There is no cost to attend, and the day will include food, live music, entertainment, a classic car cruise, a 5K run and 3K walk and more.

Day of Peace planned

Monroeville Rotary’s International Day of Peace celebration be held Sept. 20 at Monroeville Community Park West, 2399 Tilbrook Road.

The all-ages event begins at 11 a.m. and will be held in the Peace Garden, or a nearby pavilion if it’s raining. Music, dance performances and comments by local community leaders will be featured. The program will highlight the ethnic, racial and cultural richness of the community, with a focus on promoting peace through connection and understanding.

All proceeds will go toward Rotary’s scholarship program, youth services and local organizations that work to reduce food insecurity in the community.

Food distribution

A free food distribution day will take place each month at Gateway High School.

Distribution will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the high school, 3000 Gateway Campus Blvd. in Monroeville. Attendees can line up through the school parking lot.

Identification is not required.

The distributions provide food aid to nearly 800 families each month, according to organizer and school board member Valerie Warning.

Association of University People

The Association of University People invites potential new members to join them at an event.

The association invites singles aged 50 and older, who are four-year college graduates, to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include picnics, monthly dinners, a book group and meetups at local concerts and wineries.
