In advance of the Great Backyard Bird Count in February, the Monroeville Public Library is hosting its first annual Birdcraft Seed Swap, where participants will be able to join in a number of fun activities and gain knowledge about birding.

At the swap, set for 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Jan. 27, participants will learn about local birds, their feeding preferences and habitats. Bird reporting procedures and checklists also will be provided. Local artists Debbie Walker and Sheila Hawthorne Klotz will guide participants in bird crafting activities.

“We are very excited about this event and looking forward to learning more about the birds nesting in our area,” said Pam Barroso, reference and instruction librarian.

Attendees are encouraged to bring native plant seeds to share. This helps to create backyard habitats that produce seeds, fruit nectar and other essential foods for local birds. Native seeds also will be provided, while supplies last, in an effort to support healthy bird habitats.

“Backyard habitats including fruit-producing shrubs and trees, which flower at different times, make food available to birds throughout the fall and winter,” Barroso said.

The Great Backyard Bird Count — started in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society — is an annual event held over four days during which time volunteers count local birds. This year, the bird count is scheduled for Feb. 16 – 19. Bird enthusiasts worldwide will record the number of birds they see and hear and report their findings in an effort to help scientists better understand global bird populations.

Preregistration is required for the library’s all-ages event, and novice and veteran bird lovers alike are welcome. Visit www.monroevillelibrary.org for more information or to register.
