Monroeville officials reschedule Fourth of July fireworks display for Labor Day weekend
Monroeville officials have decided to wait until the first Sunday in September to set off approximately $20,000 worth of fireworks originally scheduled for July 4.
The Sept. 6 date will only feature a fireworks display, said Manager Tim Little. There will be no parade, an annual addition to the municipality’s Independence Day celebration that typically attracts hundreds of spectators.
Monroeville canceled this year’s Fourth of July festivities in April because of the covid-19 pandemic. Officials said it was too difficult to continue to plan for the event.
The display will fall on Labor Day weekend. Little said there are no other activities planned around that holiday.
At the time, Mayor Nick Gresock said the Labor Day weekend would be the “perfect match” for a rescheduled celebration because of the nature of the holiday.
“It will take workers along with the entire community to get us through this pandemic, and return us to our normal way of life,” Gresock said in April.
The mayor was not immediately available to comment Tuesday.
The fireworks will be set off around 9 p.m. at the Monroeville Mall.
