Monroeville is gearing up for the July 4 parade and fireworks display.

The 42nd annual parade will step off at 9 a.m. from the intersection of Stroschein Road and Route 22. For the second year in a row, there will be a 4K run ahead of the parade marchers.

All proceeds from the race, “Lions Run4Sight 4K on July 4,” will go to local vision-related services and organizations. Runners are encouraged to wear white as race organizers will provide red bandanas and sashes to fit a “Running with the Bulls” theme.

For more information on the race and to register, visit www.runforsight.org.

There will also be a decorated bike or wagon contest for children. Winners could win a new bicycle from Pro Bike and Run worth $350. Judging occurs 25 minutes before the start of the parade. For more information, visit bit.ly/31ABlY2.

Parade participants have until June 17 to sign up. All entrants who signed up after June 17 will “be placed after the midpoint of the lineup,” according to the parade’s entry form. Councilman Jim Johns, chairman of the Fourth of July Committee, said there are already around 100 participants who have registered.

The parade and race route will take participants west on Route 22 to Mall Plaza Boulevard, then left on Mall Circle Drive where it will end in a parking lot across from the Goodyear Auto Service Center.

Route 22 will be closed between Mall Plaza Boulevard and Stroschein Road to traffic during the parade.

Monroeville’s Independence Day will not include festivities in the Monroeville Community Park. Last year, bands, food trucks and activities for children drew crowds after the parade until 7 p.m.

Johns said they nixed that element after receiving a many calls from residents who were frustrated by traffic congestion on Tilbrook Road.

“The event is about making people happy, so that’s what we try to do,” he said.

Fireworks by Pyrotecnico Fireworks Inc. will blast off at 9:30 p.m. Johns said he hopes the display will last up to 40 minutes this year instead of the typical 20-minute pyro show.

Johns said the committee’s two-year, $18,000 contract with the company expires after this year. He said the committee is now working on securing a three-year deal for next year’s event.

“This parade (and fireworks show) has been around for more years than I can remember. We always get a lot of nice compliments,” he said.

Pail Estok with Monroeville’s Recreation and Parks has said the best spot to watch the display is in a parking lot area directly outside the movie theater, on the south side of the mall. However, parking lots around the mall will all be open for spectators.

Parking for the fireworks display is free.
