News Briefs: Indiana County fugitive arrested in Monroeville, students make dean's list, baseball tryouts and more

Monroeville police arrested Marcus A. Niehenke, 41, on Feb. 7. Niehenke had been a fugitive from Indiana County and was wanted for a 2020 DUI and three violations against Protection from Abuse orders.

He is in Allegheny County Jail and is scheduled for a court hearing in March.

Student news

Two students from Monroeville attending Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa., have been named to the school’s dean’s list. To be named on the list, students must be full-time students and maintain a 3.5 GPA on 12 or more credits during a single semester. The students are:

Kevin Rowland: studying environmental engineering

Kelsey Strawser: studying health science PA

Baseball tryouts

The Monroeville Baseball Association will hold tryouts for its Youth Legion team for any Monroeville or Pitcairn resident born between 2005 and 2008 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on March 6 and 13 at the Gateway High School gymnasium, 3000 Gateway Campus Blvd.

Fish fries on tap

The Church of the Resurrection at 455 Center Road in Monroeville will host Lenten fish fries on Feb. 19, 26, March 5, 12, 19 and 26.

It is drive-thru only with a single menu item, a fish dinner including a sandwich, fries and coleslaw. Cost is $10.

Church event planned

Monroeville Christian Church will host Oklahoma-based Creation Truth Foundation from April 18 to 21 at its location at 3780 Northern Pike.

The Creation Truth Foundation will bring its Mobile Museum of Earth History, which features fossils of dinosaurs and other artifacts. The church also will host Ryan Cox for a sermon series called “Dinosaurs, Design and Destiny.”

He will preach at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. April 18. He also will preach at 7 p.m. April 19, 21 and 23.

Creation Truth Foundation will have books and videos available for purchase. The program is free. The programs will be broadcast live on the church’s Facebook page and website.

Free tax prep

A free tax preparation service is being offered by the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania through April 10.

The service is available virtually or through a combination of online and in-person meetings.

Clients can upload their materials, and tax experts will prepare and review the return. The hybrid tax preparation will require two brief appointments in a safe environment, following covid-19 guidelines, to provide information and review the return.

The service is available to residents in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

Assistance from a volunteer tax preparer is available for people and families with a total annual income of up to $57,000.
