Eight fire companies battled a basement fire that broke out on the 300 block of Third Street in Pitcairn on Sunday morning.

Thomas Dick, chief of Pitcairn Hose Company #1, said his department and seven others fought the fire for about 45 minutes before they were able to douse the flames.

“It looks like it started out as a basement fire,” Dick said. “When we got here, we had smoke showing from every floor and window of the structure.”

While dousing heavy flames in the basement, crews discovered that the fire had spread inside the walls and ran up to the second and third stories of the home, Dick said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in the basement quickly, but had to pull walls for another 30 minutes before all of the flames were doused.

Residents of the home were able to make it out of the structure without injury. Emergency service members transported a dog from the scene to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Dick said that while the structure is repairable, it is unlivable in its current state.

“There’s a lot of damage on the structure where the fire started and some water damage on the first and second floors, but we believe it will be repairable,” Dick said.
