Monroeville officials tapped a Pittsburgh-based architectural firm to analyze the municipal building and senior center for possible security upgrades.

Council unanimously approved LGA Partners to develop a strategy and potential renovations, with an emphasis on the center’s lobby and the front entrance to Monroeville’s offices.

Start and end dates for the projects have not been set, municipal Manager Tim Little said after Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Cost for the work at the center is not to exceed $19,700. Cost of the municipal building’s evaluation is not to exceed $18,000.

Little said LGA Partners completed projects for the center before and they do good work.

The municipal building went through a state police safety evaluation over the summer.

Little declined to give details about its findings, but did speak about safety in general terms.

“There are weaknesses in every building,” he said. “You don’t want people running all around the building.”

The municipal building at 2700 Monroeville Blvd. opened in late 1999.

Police Chief Doug Cole said most of the safety measures from then still are in place and need to be upgraded.

“We need to look at these camera systems,” he said. “Technology has changed tremendously.”

The senior center at 6000 Gateway Campus Blvd. was built in 1980 and serves as a hub of activity for Monroeville and Pitcairn.

In other safety matters, council reminded residents to contact police if they see any suspicious activity in their areas.

“Nobody knows your neighborhood like you do,” Councilman Ron Harvey said.

Monroeville is one of a few towns in Allegheny County that still has its own emergency dispatch. The station number is 412-856-1111.

Council also approved the installation of a stop sign at the intersection of Bay Hill Drive at Newbury Drive, and retained MS Consultants as the municipality’s engineering firm.
