Police: 92-year-old woman dies in vehicle/pedestrian crash in UPMC East garage in Monroeville
A woman was run over and killed by a vehicle inside the UPMC East parking garage in Monroeville on Wednesday afternoon.
A Monroeville 911 dispatcher said the incident took place around 2:15 p.m.
Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased as Josephine Mayni, 92, of McKeesport.
Mayni was transported from UPMC East to Forbes Hospital where she died about three hours later, according to the medical examiner’s report.
Allegheny County officials did not explain why the woman was transported to Forbes Hospital while in the UPMC East parking garage, but AHN spokeswoman Stephanie Waite said Forbes is “home to the Level II trauma center closest to the scene of the accident.”
More information about the driver has not been released.
The driver remained on the scene after the crash, officials said.
“This is a tragedy for our UPMC East community, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family of the deceased and with those who witnessed this terrible event,” UPMC spokesman Rick Pietzak. “Monroeville and Allegheny County Police are leading the investigation and have our full cooperation.”
A UPMC security vehicle blocked the ramp to the garage as officers continued with their investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the county police tipline at 833-ALL-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.
