In October, Steel City Indoor Karting Owner John Gongas checks for driver safety before racers head out to compete at Mushroom Rally, a life-size version of Mario Kart where participants dressed up as their favorite characters and raced for a chance to go to Las Vegas.

Racing returns to Monroeville as Steel City Indoor Karting plans to reopen its doors and wave the green flag Friday.

Pit crew members announced via email that the all-electric go-kart facility at 360 Mall Circle Drive would resume operations with new safety measures at noon.

“We will have the same fast and competitive racing, but we did have to make a few changes that we wanted to tell you about,” the email read.

The message did not specify a closing time. The track usually shuts down by 9 p.m.

Safety measures include:

• Racers must use hand sanitizer upon entry.

• Plexiglass shields have been installed at the registers.

• Floor markings added to ensure social distancing.

• Storage units are unavailable, so valuables should be left in customer vehicles.

• Clean “head socks” will be provided prior to putting on the helmet.

• New riders will make a driver profile via kiosk.

• Driver meeting area is restricted to only those who have been called to get ready for their race.

• Social distancing is required in the meeting area.

• Pickup race result printout and leave helmet on the counter and head sock in the basket unless scheduled for multiple races.

The Monroeville track was transformed into the Mushroom Kingdom in October when it was used for Mushroom Rally, a life-sized version of the Nintendo hit video game “Mario Kart.”
