An event three decades in the making will soon take place at the Monroeville Convention Center.

Steel City Con, one of the largest pop culture and comic conventions in the nation, will mark its 30th anniversary in the municipality.

It’s slated for 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 11 at 209 Mall Blvd.

The convention was taken over last year by Denise DeSimone of Uniontown and Bob Stein of Gibsonia.

Stein is executive director of the University of Pittsburgh’s Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence.

DeSimone is the founder of several companies, including C-leveled, a strategic marketing firm in Pittsburgh.

Steel City Con usually takes place about three times a year with events in April, August and December.

The April event broke attendance records with more than 14,000 people visiting throughout three days.

“Denise and I are so excited to celebrate our 30th anniversary,” Stein said. “We have a lot planned for the con in general, and the remaining part of our 30th year will be awesome. We have some amazing things planned for December.”

A special anniversary party is planned for 8 p.m. to midnight Aug. 9 at the DoubleTree by Hilton, within a few hundred feet of the convention. There will be food, karaoke, contests and more. Tickets are $10 and available at the door.

Actor Ryan Hurst of “Remember the Titans,” “Taken” and “Sons of Anarchy” hosts a special yoga session from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Aug. 11 at the center. Tickets are $50 and require a Steel City Con admission ticket.

The Ghostbusters Ecto Cruiser will be on-site for fans Aug. 10-11.

Other celebrity guests include George Takei (“Star Trek”), Ron Perlman (“Hellboy,” “Sons of Anarchy”), Ray Park (“G.I. Joe,” “Star Wars: Episode 1, The Phantom Menace”), Lea Thompson (“Back to the Future” trilogy, “Caroline in the City”), Karen Allen (“Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark”), Gates McFadden (“Star Trek the Next Generation”) and Sean Patrick Flanery (“Boondock Saints”).

Costas Mandylor, Tobin Bell, Mark Rolston and Shawnee Smith from the “Saw” horror film franchise and World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Famers Honkey Tonk Man and Sean “X-Pac” Waltman are also on the card.

Adult and children costume contests with about $4,000 worth of prizes are planned for Aug. 11.
