Volunteer tutors needed in Monroeville, Pitcairn

Raising Achievement in Monroeville and Pitcairn, a nonprofit focused on raising academic excellence in students, is in need of volunteer tutors. The tutors would have the option to meet with students virtually, using tools such as Zoom or Google Meets, or in-person under health guidelines at Pitcare Inc. in Pitcairn at 549 Second Street.

Shredding paper

Guardian Storage will host paper-shredding events at 18 of its locations throughout the region, including one this month in Monroeville. The Monroeville event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at 350 Old Haymaker Road.

The event is free, but there is a limit of five file boxes. Guardian also encourages the removal of file clips. The company said in a press release it will shred more documents during the last hour of the event if there is enough space in the “Shred-It” truck.

Participants must wear a face mask and hand the items to be shredded to an associate. If people are physically unable to unload their items, an associate will assist if the items are in the vehicle’s trunk and the participant remains in the vehicle with a face mask on.

Guardian has asked those shredding documents at the event to provide a monetary donation or school supplies that will benefit The Education Partnership, a nonprofit aimed at providing school supplies to low-income districts.

Voter registration information

Voters must register by Oct. 19 in order to participate in the 2020 general election, which is Nov. 3. According to the Allegheny County Elections Office, voters can register online, by mail, or in person at the office, 542 Forbes Ave., sixth floor, in downtown Pittsburgh. Voters can also register or update their registration when obtaining a driver’s license or PennDOT ID card.
