Divine Mercy Academy Catholic students got to exercise and enjoy the spring weather recently at their annual walk-a-thon, the largest fundraiser for the Monroeville school’s parent-teacher guild.

“It’s the kids’ most fun fundraiser,” said Tina Cuda, mother of two and parent-teacher guild fundraising chair. “Students, family and friends make pledges using an online platform. Then the kids walk laps around the school (and) all grades, preschool through eighth (participate).”

The walk-a-thon raised just more than $15,000 — the highest grossing fundraiser of the year for the parent-teacher guild, which sponsors many activities throughout the year. Those include Catholic Schools Week activities, grandparent breakfast, Thanksgiving breakfast and the last day of school celebration.

Cuda has been in charge of the walk-a-thon for the past three years, but said it’s a team effort.

Student council sponsored and distributed custom “Walk with the Spirit” T-shirts for the May 20 event. Griff’s Italian Ice Soft Serve in Export donated cool treats.

Students also earned rewards before the fundraiser even began. For example, the first two classrooms that had every student register for the event earned extra recess and a dress-down day.

Other fun rewards include Popsicles, pajama day, a pizza party, an afternoon at Outer Limits Adventure Park and –the opportunity to soak Principal Nikole Laubham.

Cuda acknowledged the hard work of families, friends and teachers to make the event possible.

“Our walk-a-thon was a huge success and a fantastic reminder of the spirit and support that makes our school so special,” she said.
