Work that will last a little over a year on one of Monroeville’s busiest roads will start Friday.

The nearly $11 million project includes replacing traffic lights, repaving, drainage improvements and structure work on the bridge connecting Route 22 to Route 286, said Steve Cowan, a PennDOT spokesman.

Cowan said the first few weeks will involve trimming trees in preparation for the other work.

He expects the project, which involves work on both east- and west-bound lanes, to be completed by June 25, 2020. There will be “numerous nightly and weekend lane restrictions,” Cowan said.

The work will be from the I-76 interchange to the county line in Murrysville. The project does not include the Route 22 and Route 48 intersection, said Paul Hugus, Monroeville’s engineering director.

The work is part of a $265 million federal Department of Transportation allocation to PennDOT for projects within District 11 that cover 270 miles of state roadways, 48 bridges and 23 landslides.
