Emergency services reported to the scene of a motorcycle crash Wednesday night on Brownsville Road in South Park Township.

Here are some of the latest news items from this morning, Thursday, Sept. 4:

1 injured in South Park motorcycle crash

A section of Brownsville Road between Shang Road and Sylvania Drive was closed Wednesday night after a motorcycle crash.

A social media post from the Broughton Volunteer Fire Department said emergency services assisted with the injured motorcycle rider. A helicopter was initially requested for transport but was canceled because of a lengthy estimated time of arrival. EMS transported the patient to a local trauma center for treatment.

Crews remained on scene to assist with traffic control and scene lighting.

The fire department said that the SHACOG Crash Reconstruction Team and South Park Township Police are investigating the crash.

Liberty Tunnels feature lauded as historic landmark

The Liberty Tunnels Ventilation System will be recognized Thursday as an American Society of Civil Engineers National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

The ASCE approved the system as a landmark in March and will have a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Liberty Tunnel fan house, with PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll and representatives from ASCE attending.

The ASCE landmark program recognizes historically significant national and international civil engineering projects, structures and sites.

At over a mile long, the Liberty Tunnels were America’s longest auto tunnels upon opening in January 1924. The need for new kinds of public safety systems, including cross-passages and a ventilation system, for such a long tunnel were recognized from the start of the design, said a statement from PennDOT.
