Roundup: Clemente Bridge to close for concert; Dick's charity arm ends support to McKeesport schools

Roberto Clemente Bridge to close Thursday

The Roberto Clemente Bridge will close from 7 a.m. to just before midnight Thursday for a Post Malone concert at PNC Park, according to the Pittsburgh Department of Public Works.

The bridge, which provides a convenient walking path from Downtown to the North Shore, is often closed to vehicles for special events, including festivals, charity events and concerts. It’s also shut down for certain Pirates games.

Drivers will still be able to take the sister bridges from Seventh and Ninth streets.

Post Malone has shown he’s capable of drawing large crowds in Pittsburgh, selling out the Pavilion at Star Lake in 2023. Jelly Roll, who is also part of the tour, filled both Star Lake and PPG Paints Arena that year.

Thursday will mark both artists’ first stadium show in the city.

Dick’s charity arm ends partnership with McKeesport Area

The Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation has severed its partnership with the McKeesport Area School District that funded an annual summer camp, a community resource center and new workout equipment for students.

Superintendent Don MacFann announced the dissolution Tuesday in a letter to parents.

“Over the course of this school year, MASD has worked diligently with DSGF to ensure our partnership benefited as many students as possible, with a particular focus on supporting their academic success,” MacFann said. “Unfortunately, we were informed — without prior notice — that DSGF made a unilateral decision to end the partnership.”

The foundation is shifting to a grant-based model of support for the organizations, MacFann added, and the district will continue to explore opportunities for collaboration.

He also said Dick’s will honor its commitments through the summer.

Dick’s said in a statement the actions of district officials made it necessary to end the partnership.

“From the beginning, we were clear that we weren’t just looking to provide funding, we were looking to be a true partner sitting side by side with the McKeesport team to reimagine how the elementary school experience could be approached in a holistic way — one that serves the whole child, their family and the community,” the company said. “Unfortunately, the current school board and district leadership did not uphold the written partnership agreement we had in place.”

The partnership dates back to 2021.

In 2022, it led to the opening of a community center in Twin Rivers Elementary School, which Dick’s claims boosted student attendance there “drastically” and paid dividends in student and staff engagement.

Crash on Sewickley Bridge injures 5

Five people were taken to a hospital Tuesday night following a crash on the Sewickley Bridge.

The bridge was briefly closed, according to TribLive news partner WTAE, but reopened early Wednesday morning.

There is no word on the cause of the crash.
