Driver escapes injury in Turnpike fire

A driver freed themselves from a tractor-trailer cab after a fire broke out inside of it Wednesday afternoon on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, authorities said.

First responders from the Wexford Volunteer Fire Company responded to the blaze, which was under control “within 10 minutes of dispatch,” the company said on social media.

The driver was not injured.

There are no reports yet on what started the early-afternoon fire.

2 injured in Penn Hills crash

Two people were injured Wednesday in a car crash in Penn Hills.

Paramedics treated the victims, who authorities did not name, at the scene around 10:30 a.m. after the incident in the 7300 block of Saltsburg Road. Details about their injuries was unclear.

Firefighters from Penn Hills No. 7 Volunteer Fire Company said “fluids and debris” from the two-vehicle crash were found nearby.

Man hospitalized after Homestead shooting

A man was hospitalized Wednesday evening following a shooting in Homestead.

Police said they were dispatched at 10:44 p.m. to the 300 block of East 13th Avenue. First responders found the victim, who authorities did not name, with a single gunshot wound in his leg.

The man was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

No arrests have been announced.

Inspection to restrict Route 60 traffic

Light-pole inspections will force contractors to restrict traffic Thursday night, weather permitting, along Route 60 (Steubenville Pike) in Robinson and Kennedy townships, PennDOT officials said.

The shoulder restrictions will occur from 7 p.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday morning as crews conduct inspections around Steubenville Pike, Interstate 79 and parts of the Parkway West.

The work is part of a nearly $15 million road project that started in April 2024, officials said. It includes concrete pavement patching, replacing guide rails and cable barriers, and upgrading signs and highway lighting.
