Attempted homicide charged in Pittsburgh stabbing
A Pittsburgh man has been charged with attempted homicide in a stabbing Thursday in the city’s North Side that critically injured another man.
Brian Kellum, 46, also is charged with aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, accused of stabbing the man multiple times in the back and once in the abdomen.
Pittsburgh police were called at about 6 a.m. to a reported stabbing at a bus stop near Cedar Avenue and Pressley Street. That intersection is located in the city’s East Allegheny, or Deutschtown, neighborhood.
Officers found a man who was bleeding substantially and began to treat his wounds until paramedics arrived and took him to Allegheny General Hospital, police said.
Police have not released the name of the stabbing victim.
Police said the witness told them the stabbing victim and a man known as “Flats” were involved in an earlier verbal argument before the witness saw the men “rolling around on the ground” in a parking lot. According to the complaint, the witness reported seeing “Flats” get up and walk away while the victim remained on the ground bleeding and was heard to say, “He stabbed me in the back.”
Police said the witness provided a description of “Flats’” shoes that matched a pair found in the area where Kellum later was taken into custody.
Investigators used surveillance camera images and deployed a drone in the area of Chestnut Street and the 16th Street Bridge off-ramp, tracking the suspect to a homeless encampment, according to the complaint.
Kellum was arrested and was awaiting arraignment Friday morning.
