Overnight closures announced on Route 28

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced overnight closures that will impact drivers this week on Route 28.

The southbound Route 28 to Millvale off-ramp is scheduled to be closed Monday through Wednesday from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. A single lane restriction also will be in place on southbound Route 28 at that interchange each night while crews conduct electrical work.

Wednesday night through Friday night, the northbound Route 28 to the 31st Street Bridge off-ramp will be closed. Crews are installing signs, guide rails and pavement markings.

There also will be shoulder restrictions on the southbound off-ramp to the 31st Street Bridge/Strip District from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for electrical work.

The work is part of a $4.8 million safety project that includes the installation of sensors, detectors and cameras that aim to detect wrong-way drivers between Pittsburgh and Harmar.

Tree falls on occupied truck in Penn Hills

A tree fell Sunday on a truck near the intersection of Cedarwood Drive and Universal Road in Penn Hills, according to Penn Hills Volunteer Fire Company.

The driver declined to be taken to the hospital.

Youth soccer club says cash box, equipment stolen

In a social media post, the South Allegheny Youth Soccer Club said a locked storage shed was broken into last week and cash and equipment was stolen.

The lock and handle were damaged in the later half of last week, the volunteer-run organization said.

The soccer club said it lost most of its concession inventory, a cash box that included funds from last weekend’s games and a recent tip board fundraiser, two camping chairs, referees’ whistles and stopwatches.

“We are extremely disappointed and saddened by this incident,” the group wrote on Facebook. “These thefts affect not just our club, but our players and the community that supports them.”
