Police pursuit results in man jumping into Mon River

Pittsburgh police said a man they were pursuing over an attempted carjacking Wednesday jumped into the Monongahela River to escape arrest.

Authorities said the attempted carjacking happened just after 7 p.m. in the Duck Hollow Trail parking area at McFarren and Ettwien streets.

Two men in a vehicle said a man on a bicycle threatened them by implying he had a weapon, according to Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Cara Cruz. They said he demanded their keys and when they gave them to him left on his bike.

Police said they were able to locate the suspect in the area but he resisted arrest and jumped into the river.

Pittsburgh River Rescue assisted by throwing the suspect a life preserver, which he repeatedly refused, Cruz said. The suspect did finally take the preserver but continued to swim away from authorities, according to police.

Officers said they had enter the river to assist EMS divers and River Rescue responders because the suspect was fighting with divers and a Pittsburgh police boat operator.

Police took the suspect into custody and the suspect was medically cleared and taken to Allegheny County Jail, Cruz said.

The suspect has not been identified.

The man faces charges including robbery, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

Pittsburgh museums offer free admission in August

A “3 for free” deal is being offered in August at three popular Pittsburgh museums.

Participating museums include the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Heinz History Center and The Andy Warhol Museum.

The offer is in recognition of all three museums receiving national recognition from USA Today’s 10 Best Readers Choice Awards.

Pittsburgh was the only city with three museums ranked in the top five of these awards.

The program is through the Allegheny Regional Asset District, and the free offer is good for general admission.
