Mt. Lebanon police find that 'suspicious' package left in front of offices of legislator, Social Security, not dangerous

Mt. Lebanon police evacuated a building along Washington Road on Wednesday evening that houses offices for state Rep. Dan Miller, D-Mt. Lebanon, and the Social Security Administration after police were called to the scene of a suspicious package.

According to the department’s Facebook page, police responded to 650 Washington Road around 5 p.m. where they learned a man was seen placing a bag near the entrance of a ground level office, officials said.

Witnesses reported the man was acting strange, and when questioned about the bag he denied any knowledge of it.

However, witnesses told police the man also warned people to stay away from the bag, according to the post. Due to those conversations, officers believed the public could be at risk.

The building, as well as nearby businesses, were evacuated and traffic was diverted.

Mt. Lebanon police called the Allegheny County Bomb Squad to the scene, which eventually determined the bag was not dangerous.

By 6:45 p.m. the scene was cleared and the road reopened.

The man police say is involved in the incident is described as white and in his 60s. He was wearing a flannel shirt, blue jeans and a winter hat. According to police, he carried a light blue backpack.
