Easter events a little easier to plan after a year of adjusting to covid-19

Kids and their parents keep their eyes peeled for eggs in the 2018 Greensburg Easter egg hunt at St. Clair Park.

Local towns are planning for another Easter under the specter of the covid-19 pandemic. But, unlike last year, those planning the events have a much clearer idea of how to safely host them.

“It was easier to plan and anticipate what we wanted our holiday event to look like,” Murrysville Recreation Director Carly Greene said. “Easter for us has always been a challenge in providing a quality event. Those events are all hugely attended and they’re tough to manage.”

The Delmont Recreation Committee will host an April “grab-and-go” event for children in three age groups: 3 and under, 4-6 years old and 7-10 years old.

It will take place from noon to 2 p.m. in the pavilion at Newhouse Park, off of Stotler Road. Pre-registration is required by March 14 at DelmontBoro.com/events.

The afternoon will also include a kids’ craft with the Delmont Public Library staff, the Salvation Army canteen and a visit from the Easter Bunny.

In Murrysville, the Easter Bunny will hop through Murrysville on March 26, when the recreation department hosts an Easter drive-thru celebration from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Murrysville municipal building, 4100 Sardis Road.

“We were going to try a new event last year, and then that didn’t happen,” Greene said. “So we’ve actually ‘reinvented’ it again.”

Families can drive through to be greeted by the Easter Bunny and yellow chick, and pick up a free treat bag while supplies last.

Greene said she’s happy to be able to provide not just the “Egg My Yard” Easter event — where recreation officials will hide eggs in 100 families’ yards — but also to host a contact-free event with the drive-thru.

“We won’t be asking families to stand out in the cold and fight over plastic eggs,” she said with a laugh. “So with the bad, there’s at least a little bit of good.”

There is no cost to participate in the drive-thru, and pre-registration is not required.
