Holiday-themed events
Here is a list of holiday-themed concerts and events taking place in December:
Dec. 5: Light Up Export. Borough officials will host the annual event from 6-9 p.m. along Washington Avenue. As in years past, the evening will include a cookie crawl featuring local businesses. Register for the crawl at the Export fire hall, 5821 Washington Ave.
Dec. 6: Santa at Sardis. The Murrysville Recreation Department will host its annual event from 1-4 p.m. at Sardis Park, 5200 Rocky Hill Lane. The afternoon will include a bonfire, children’s activities, s’mores, and photos with Santa. The park is located at the intersection of Saltsburg Road and Rocky Hill Lane in Murrysville. Dec. 6- 7: Delmont Christmas Pilgrimage. This is a 30-minute walk through the Nativity story at Shields Farm. It will take place from 5-9 p.m. on Dec. 6 and 5-8 p.m. on Dec. 7. The “Junior Pilgrimage,” for children, will be from 3-5 p.m. on Dec. 7. Shuttles will run to the pilgrimage from local churches, which will also host holiday-themed events during the pilgrimage. Dec. 7: Westmoreland Choral Society Concert. The concert will be at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 300 S. Main St., Greensburg. The society will be joined by Voices of Westmoreland, a group of students in grades 4-7 from across the county. The cost is $15 at the door.
Dec. 8: Symphony East: “Sounds of Joy: Jingle Bell Bash.” Symphony East will host performer Donna Groom at this holiday program. It will begin with an 11 a.m. holiday basket raffle and prize drawing, followed by a buffet luncheon at the Lamplighter in Salem. The performance will begin at 1 p.m. Groom is a vocalist and cruise ship entertainer. The cost is $40 per person for the buffet and show. Reservations for the luncheon are due by Dec. 4. Reservations are not required for the musical program. Show-only tickets are $15. For more information, call 724-327-4864.
Dec. 13: East End Kids Annual Pancake Breakfast. East End Kids, a nonprofit professional teen song and dance ensemble, will hold a pancake breakfast at Mother of Sorrows School, 3264 Evergreen Drive, Monroeville. Three seating times are available: 8:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m., and noon. The breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, potatoes, hot chocolate, coffee, hot tea and lemonade. Each seating features a performance of “Sparkle Jolly Christmas,” a traveling craft station, a basket raffle, a 50-50 drawing and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, complete with a free cookie and photos. The cost is $15 for ages 11 and older, $10 for ages 2 to 10; children 2 and younger are free.
Dec. 13-14: Monticello Lights. Residents of Delmont’s Monticello Drive invite the public to drive through the neighborhood to see their holiday decorating competition and donate to vote for their favorites. All proceeds will go to the Delmont Police Department K-9 unit and WTAE’s Project Bundle-Up. The event will be from 6-9 p.m. both nights.
Rewind Reuse Center workshops
The Rewind Reuse Center, 5853 Washington Ave., Export will host several children’s activities in December, including:
• Dec. 5: The center will be part of the cookie crawl for “Light Up Export” night from 6-9 p.m. with raffle baskets and a free craft project.
• Dec. 12: Pop-in teen night, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $2, participants can create a holiday project. No registration required.
• The center will be closed from Dec. 22 to Jan. 3.

• Dec. 12: Franklin Township Municipal Sanitary Authority, 6 p.m. at the authority offices, 3001 Meadowbrook Road in Murrysville. An agenda is available in advance at FTMSA.org.
• Dec. 16: Murrysville council, 7 p.m. at the municipal building, 4100 Sardis Road. Meetings are broadcast live on Comcast local access Channel 21, and streamed at Murrysville.com, where an agenda is also available in advance.
Auditions planned for East End Kids
Auditions for East End Kids will take place at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 11 at DeStella Dance Centre, 5800 Kennedy Ave., Export.
Students in grades 6-12 are welcome to try out for the teen song and dance ensemble.
Candidates should prepare 32 bars of a ballad and 32 bars of an up-tempo selection (Broadway-style preferred) and wear comfortable clothing and shoes for a short movement routine. They will need to bring accompaniment on their phones for their vocal auditions or be prepared to sing a cappella.

AAUW speaker to discuss Winnie’s Wagon
The Murrysville branch of the American Association of University Women will welcome Homeless Children’s Education Fund President and CEO AJ Jefferson as its Dec. 11 guest speaker.
Jefferson will talk about Winnie’s Wagon, the first mobile classroom in southwestern Pennsylvania dedicated to serving children experiencing homelessness. It was created in partnership with the Pittsburgh Children’s Museum.
Jefferson is a Seton Hill University graduate and advocates for people with special needs in Allegheny County.
The program will be at 10 a.m. at the Murrysville Community Library, 4130 Sardis Road.

Delmont library programs
The Delmont Public Library, 75 School St., will host the following programs in December:
• Dec. 6: Backyard Bird Explorers, 11 a.m. for kids ages 6-12. Explore fun facts, play nature-themed games and create a bird craft to take home.
• Dec. 18: Winter Birding 101, 5 p.m. for kids ages 6-12. Discover how birds stay warm in winter, find food in the snow and spot some of the region’s cold-weather avian residents.

Speaker discusses cognitive impairment
The Mother of Sorrows Boomers & Beyond series will welcome guest speaker Dr. Ellen Whyte at its Dec. 9 meeting.
Whyte will discuss the causes of abnormal cognitive aging and when it may be time to see a primary care physician or specialist.
It will be at noon at the church’s social hall, 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville. There is no cost to attend. Attendees may bring a bag lunch and a friend.
Bell ringers wanted
The Salvation Army is seeking local volunteers to serve as bell ringers during its holiday fundraising drive.
Ringers are needed every Friday and Saturday through Dec. 20 at the Walmart on Hollywood Boulevard in Salem. One-hour shifts are available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Virtual holiday paint & sip
The Myasthenia Gravis Association of Western PA is hosting its Sixth Annual Virtual Holiday Paint & Sip Celebration to benefit MGA’s free patient support services.
This year’s event will be held 7-8:30 p.m. Dec. 11. For a $50 donation to MGA, participants will receive a link to participate in the virtual holiday paint and sip event, the supplies needed to create their own snowflake-inspired art, and two bottles of wine from Kavic Winery in Carnegie. The creation of the art will be led by art therapist Kristy Walter and the wine tasting will be led by Michael and Patricia Kavic.
Myasthenia Gravis is often called the “Snowflake Disease” because it manifests itself differently in every patient.

Journalism scholarship
The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania is accepting applications for its 20th annual Bob Fryer Memorial Scholarship ($5,000) and the club’s annual $2,500 scholarship for aspiring journalists.

Deadline for entries is Feb. 9. Winners will be awarded at the club’s annual Golden Quills Awards Dinner.
American Legion scholarships
The Pennsylvania American Legion is taking entries for its annual essay contest. Winners will receive scholarships of $3,500, $3,000 or $2,500.
The contest is open to students in grades 9-12. Students can be from public, private, parochial, cyber/charter or home-schooled.

AARP seeking tax-prep aides
The AARP Foundation is seeking volunteers to be trained for its tax aide program, the nation’s largest free volunteer-based tax preparation program.
Volunteers can be trained as tax return preparers or as client facilitators. Anyone interested in volunteering can call 724-374-3780.

Association of University People
The Association of University People invites potential new members to join them at an event.
The association invites singles aged 50 and older, who are four-year college graduates, to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include picnics, monthly dinners, a book group and meetups at local concerts and wineries.
