Upcoming Halloween events

• The Export Halloween Parade will take place Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., with signups beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Export Volunteer Fire Department station at the corner of Washington Avenue and Lincoln Avenue.

• Trick-or-Trunk at Murrysville Shop’n Save, will take place Oct. 29 from 1-4 p.m. outside the store at 4536 William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Decorate your vehicle’s trunk and give away prewrapped candy. Children ages 12 and under will parade around the vehicles, and prizes will be awarded for the best-“dressed” vehicle and best costume.

‘Howl-O-Ween’ party in Murrysville

Walker’s Pet Ho-Tail will host its 16th annual “Howl-O-Ween” party at 3:30 p.m., Oct. 29 in Murrysville.

For a $5 cash-only donation, owners can have pet photos taken. Photos will take place starting at 1 p.m. for pets not attending the party.

To RSVP for the party, call 724-327-7297. All pets must be on a leash, and proof of current rabies, distemper and Bordetella vaccine plus negative fecal are required. Records must be brought in or faxed in advance.

Library will host World War I program

The Murrysville Community Library and municipal recreation department will host a World War I Footlocker Outreach program created by Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum in Pittsburgh at 6 p.m. on Nov. 1.

Guests will be immersed in a soldier’s life with information about uniforms, equipment and experiences. Artifacts from the museum’s collection will be on display along with local veterans’ stories.

Active shooter response training

Murrysville police will host a Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events, or CRASE, training from 6:30-9 p.m. on Nov. 2.

Murrysville’s Sgt. Dave Coleman and Sgt. Ryan Auvil will lead the course, which outlines what residents should do when confronted with an active shooter, providing strategies and guidance.

There is no cost to attend.

It will take place at Franklin Regional Middle School, 4660 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Trick-or-treat dates are as follows for towns in the Star’s coverage area:

East Suburban Artists League meeting

The East Suburban Artists League will welcome guest speaker Ann McCartney to its next meeting, 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at Christ’s Lutheran Church in Murrysville.

McCartney is an oil painter from the South Hills area who has organized and overseen more than 20 art shows, led workshops, instructed and facilitated for the Primary Colors Art Guild over the past decade.

The presentation is free and open to the public. The church is at 5330 Old Logan Ferry Road in Murrysville.

Walk-a-thon to benefit Meals on Wheels

A Nov. 5 walk-a-thon at Newhouse Park in Delmont will benefit Delmont Meals on Wheels.

It will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the park, off Stotler Road in Delmont. Walkers will solicit sponsorship and donations, and light refreshments will be served, with 100% of the event’s proceeds going to Delmont Meals on Wheels.

Residents can also drop off donations for Meals on Wheels through Nov. 5 at the library, 75 School Street. Donations for the group can be mailed to Delmont Meals on Wheels, 301 East Pittsburgh St., Delmont, Pa., 15626.

International Women meeting in Monroeville

The International Women group will meet at 9:30 a.m., Nov. 4 at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, 2310 Haymaker Road in Monroeville.

All women in the community, whether American or foreign-born, are invited to attend. The featured speaker will be Barbara Burstin, author of “Sophie: The Incomparable Mayor Masloff.”

The church’s babysitting service is suspended until further notice.

‘Work of Our Hands’ craft show

The 11th “Work of Our Hands” craft show will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Lamplighter Restaurant.

The show will feature an artisan market and craft vendors ranging from fiber art, jewelry and pottery to natural soaps, botanical art, photography, cross-stitch and more.

The Lamplighter is at 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem.

Land trust to host Westmoreland Ramble

The Westmoreland Land Trust has announced its 2022 Westmoreland Ramble, a chance for residents to explore parts of Murrysville, Export and Delmont by car to enjoy the fall scenery.

There is no set date for this year’s Ramble, but instead has been published as a route with information about the area’s parks, nature preserves and historic features. The 18.2-mile drive is detailed in steps at Westmoreland-LandTrust.org.

Volunteers sought for ‘Trick or Treat on the Trail’

Murrysville Recreation Department officials are seeking local businesses and organizations to set up tables along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail for its Oct. 29 “Trick or Treat on the Trail” event.

From noon to 2 p.m., groups will hand out treats.

Groups will meet at the Murrysville Community Center, 3091 Carson Ave. in Murrysville.

Craft show fundraiser set for Oct. 30

An Oct. 30 craft show will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at the Polish Club in Export.

There will be crafts and vendor tables, a 50/50 drawing, Chinese auction and food trucks. The cost to set up a craft table is $20. Proceeds will benefit medical treatment for Kim Keibler-Mohr.

Pink ribbon campaign at Panera

Panera locations in Greensburg, Monroeville, Murrysville, North Huntingdon and more will participate in the company’s Pink Ribbon Bagel fundraising campaign during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A portion of proceeds from each pink ribbon bagel will go to the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation and Cancer Bridges. The campaign raised more than $47,000 in 2021.

Collection for used book sale

The Murrysville branch of the American Association of University Women will hold its annual book sale Nov. 10-12, and is accepting book donations at the library, 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville.

Donations can be fiction, nonfiction and children’s books, as well as complete jigsaw puzzles and video games. Encyclopedias, manuals, textbooks and musty/moldy books will not be accepted.

The group is also seeking volunteers to help with the annual sale.

Police host drug take-back, license plate replacement

Murrysville Police will host a National Drug Take-Back Day event as well as a license plate replacement event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 29 at the police station.

Residents can anonymously dispose of unused prescription drugs and other medications. A sharps container will be on-site for needles and Epi-pens.

In addition, residents with damaged or illegible license plates can fill out an MV-44 form for a new registration plate at no cost.

A license plate is deemed illegible when one more numbers or letter cannot be recognized from 50 feet away, or if the plate shows blistering, peeling or loss of reflectivity.

Women’s Business Network meetings

The Women’s Business Network’s Murrysville chapter will meet on the second and fourth Thursday of the month, 8:15 a.m. at Dick’s Diner, 4100 William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

This month’s second meeting will be Oct. 27. The group’s virtual meetings are held via Zoom on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 7 p.m.

AARP seeks volunteers for tax program

The AARP Foundation is seeking volunteers to train for its tax aide program, the nation’s largest volunteer-based tax preparation service.

The group is looking for volunteers to help support tax preparation activities in Murrysville, Delmont, Penn Township, Trafford and North Huntingdon. Open positions include tax return prepper, client facilitator and appointment scheduler.

Association of University People meeting

The Association of University People’s club for single college graduates age 50 and over invites potential new members to join them for monthly dinners, gatherings and more.

The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Atria’s, 4869 William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

The association will also host a Thanksgiving Day dinner with a multi-room buffet at the Lamplighter, 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem.

Fall craft and vendor show

Monroeville United Methodist Church will host a fall craft and vendor show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 29 at the church, 219 Center Road in Monroeville.

There will be roughly 50 vendors including artist Linda Barnicott. Refreshments will be available to buy, and proceeds will go toward the church’s missions.

Murrysville schedules leaf and yard-waste pickups

Murrysville and municipal hauler Republic Services announced dates for leaf and yard-waste pickup this fall: Nov. 12 and Dec. 3, all Saturdays. To schedule a pickup, fill out the Curbside Leaf Collection Program form available at Murrysville.com.

There is a 20-bag limit. The sign-up deadline is the Thursday prior to the pickup date. Leaves must be in biodegradable leaf bags. Packages of five bags can be purchased at local hardware and home improvement stores.

Do not place grass clippings, trash, recycling materials or any other refuse in the bags. Small twigs and brush cannot exceed 3 inches in diameter and 48 inches in length.
