Murrysville area: Veterans Day events, 'Girl's Night Out,' more

Veterans Day activities

The White Valley AMVETS, Delmont VFW and Murrysville and Export American Legions will partner to host Veterans Day activities throughout the community. Events include:

• 9 a.m., ceremony at Eastview Union Cemetery, 339 East Pittsburgh St., Delmont

• 9:15 a.m., Delmont honor roll at the borough building memorial, 77 Greensburg St., Delmont

• 9:30 a.m., ceremony at First Presbyterian Church, 101 Church St., Delmont

• 10:15 a.m., Export honor roll at borough war memorial, between Washington Avenue and the Westmoreland Heritage Trail.

• 10:30 a.m., honor roll at Murrysville Community Park, 4056 Wiestertown Rd.

• 11 a.m., honor roll at White Valley AMVETS Post 85, 2100 Carolina St., Murrysville, followed by veterans lunch.

Volunteers for tree planting

Delmont officials are seeking volunteers to help plant 15 trees on the Shields Farm property on Nov. 15.

The borough acquired the trees through grant funding, and will host a 9 a.m. planting session. Volunteers will meet at Shields Farm, at Overly and Fairview streets, and are asked to bring their own tools if available.

‘Girl’s Night Out’ at Moose

The Export Moose will host a “Girl’s Night Out” from 6-9 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Moose, 5903 Washington Ave.

The evening will include shopping, food and live music.

Thespians present ‘Elsewhere’

The Franklin Regional Thespians will stage a production of Don Zolidis’s play “Elsewhere” Nov. 17-20 at the Franklin Regional High School auditorium.

Tickets are $8. There is no reserved seating.

Shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17-19, with a 2 p.m. matinee Nov. 20 at the high school, 3200 School Road in Murrysville.

Charity collecting candy

Local nonprofit Military Connections will have collection bins in both Allegheny and Westmoreland counties for leftover Halloween candy that will be donated to troops overseas.

Collection points are located at:

• Military Connections, 313 Tionesta Drive, New Kensington

• ​Tomlinson Insurance Agency, 506 Allegheny River Blvd., Oakmont

• Oakmont Realty, 630 Allegheny River Blvd., Oakmont

In addition, for those in the South Hills, John F. Slater Funeral Home at 4201 Brownsville Road in Brentwood is also collecting candy and other supplies through the end of November that will e donated through Military Connections.

Needed supplies include granola bars, 5-Hour Energy drinks, candy canes, Pop-Tarts, Slim Jims, individual bags of nuts and fruit snacks, energy bars and single-serve powdered Gatorade.

Train station hours changing

The Export Train Station has changed its hours for winter.

The station will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Daily hours will resume in April 2023.

Marathon swimmer speaks

Franklin Regional graduate and “Oceans Seven” marathon swimmer Darren Miller will be the featured speaker at a Nov. 15 presentation at the Murrysville municipal building.

Miller, a Delmont native, swam seven oceans spanning five continents during his first attempts to benefit the Children’s Hospital Foundation. His presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Murrysville council chamber at 4100 Sardis Road. There is no cost to attend.

Recreation officials will be collecting donations for the nonprofit Sportsmen and Landowners Association of Murrysville, to help fund repairs to handicap access for fishing in Sloan Creek.

Choir to present ‘A Patriotic Thanksgiving’

The Murrysville Cantata Choir will present its fifth annual worship concert, “A Patriotic Thanksgiving,” at 4 p.m. Nov. 13 at First Presbyterian Church in Murrysville.

Drive-thru dinner at Union Presbyterian

Union Presbyterian Church in Washington Township will host a drive-thru dinner from 4-6 p.m., Nov. 10 at the church, 656 Route 380.

Meals are available by suggested donation (no specific amount, and those who cannot afford to donate can still get a meal) and include rigatoni with meat sauce, salad, rolls and dessert. Those picking up a meal can drive around to the back of the church.

AAUW prepares for book sale

The American Association of University Women in Murrysville will host its annual book sale Nov. 10-12 at the Murrysville Community Library, and are also seeking volunteers to help with aspects of the event. The hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 10 and 11, and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 12.

Volunteers are needed to take leftover books to Half Price Books in Monroeville after the sale. The library is at 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville.

Upcoming public meeting dates

The following meetings are open to the public:

• Murrysville council, 7 p.m., Nov. 16 at the municipal building, 4100 Sardis Road. Meetings are broadcast live on Comcast local access Channel 19 and livestreamed at Murrysville.com, where an agenda is available in advance.

• Franklin Regional curriculum committee, 5 p.m., Nov. 7 at the district administrative offices, 3170 School Road in Murrysville.

‘Polar Express’ reading, visit from St. Nicholas

The Murrysville Recreation Department will host a reading of “The Polar Express” children’s book and a visit with St. Nicholas in December.

Sessions will take place at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 and 10 a.m. Dec. 10, at the Murrysville Community Center, 3091 Carson Ave. The cost is $20.

The event will include hot chocolate and cookies, and children will receive their own train ticket.

Association of University People meetings

The Association of University People’s club for single college graduates will host four dinners in November:

• Nov. 16, 12:30 p.m. at Nakama, 1611 East Carson St., Pittsburgh

• Nov. 18, 5-7 p.m. at Primanti Bros., 1539 Washington Ave., Mt. Lebanon

• Nov. 24, 2 p.m., Thanksgiving dinner at the Lamplighter, 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem
