Murrysville residents will get a GetGo convenience store and gas station off Old William Penn Highway, but they’ll have to get their cars washed elsewhere.

Council gave unanimous approval Wednesday night for development of a 4,900-square-foot store alongside a dozen fuel pumps near the existing Giant Eagle.

Giant Eagle officials agreed to eliminate a proposed car wash at council’s request. There’s an existing GetGo with a car wash 5 miles east on Route 22 in Salem Township.

“I believe Giant Eagle has worked with staff to mitigate the potential (traffic) impact it’s going to have there,” said council President Josh Lorenz. “Removing the car wash, I think, will alleviate a lot of that.”

Former council President Joan Kearns did not agree.

“My concern is the traffic snarl you’re going to be looking at in that area,” Kearns said. “Afternoon traffic backs up way beyond Tarr Hollow Road. … I like GetGo, but this is just the wrong place to put it, based on the traffic that will occur.”

Lorenz did not believe that the GetGo alone would cause large-scale traffic back-ups.

“Will we have to look at traffic there going forward in the future? Perhaps,” he said. “I don’t know that it’ll be a consequence of this development; it will probably be a confluence of things. But this complies with what we’re asking.”

Giant Eagle officials said they expect construction to begin toward the end of the year.
