Two years ago, Murrysville Meals on Wheels Coordinator Lynn Staab was looking for volunteer drivers as the organization marked its 45th anniversary.

This year, she’s seeking a few folks willing to throw down once a month in the kitchen.

“That’s where our need is now,” Staab said. “All of our driver spots are filled, so any volunteer drivers would go on our substitute list.”

Four days a week, Murrysville Meals on Wheels volunteers prep meals at First Presbyterian Church’s Laird Hall from 8:15-11 a.m., before drivers make deliveries to between 50 and 60 clients.

“Every day we have 12 different volunteers, six in the kitchen and six delivering,” Staab said.

Because the Murrysville organization, originally formed in 1972, asks only one day per month from volunteers, it draws from a pool of 200 people.

“That sounds like a lot, but we still have a lot of open slots,” Staab said.

Volunteers prep meals Monday through Thursday.

“It’s a friendly environment, and all you have to do is follow a recipe,” Staab said. “You make some friends, and you help the community by making some food.”
