When Camryn Hall wakes up in the morning, the Murrysville teen may have to take a moment to think about exactly which rehearsal — or rehearsals — she needs to prepare for.
Some days it’s rehearsal for the Pittsburgh Musical Theater’s upcoming production of “The Sound of Music,” in which both Camryn, 16, and her younger brother Aidan, 14, are participating. Other days, it’s rehearsal for Westinghouse Arts High School’s production of “9 to 5,” where Camryn is not only a member of the cast but also the ensemble’s dance captain.
“It’s crazy, but it’s always fun,” she said.
For Camryn and Aidan, theater is a regular part of their lives. Camryn started at 8 years old with a few shows for Stage Right! in Greensburg and the Civic Light Opera in Pittsburgh, before appearing regularly in Pittsburgh Musical Theater (PMT) productions since sixth grade.
And while Camryn is onstage as Louisa Von Trapp, Aidan will be working behind the scenes as the assistant student director, his first time in a technical role.
“It’s really cool to be up close with the director and the stage manager,” he said. “There’s a lot more going on backstage than it looks like.”
Both siblings have been part of PMT’s conservatory productions, but this will be Camryn’s third show of the PMT’s professional season.
“They get to interact with professional adult actors,” said their mother Lori Hall. “The woman playing Maria is here from New York City. They really mentor the kids and the kids get to learn from the professionals.”
But with a schedule packed full of rehearsals, cramming everything into a full day can be a challenge.
“It’s tough trying to get all my schoolwork done,” Camryn said.
For Aidan, the challenge is in adapting to a new environment.
“I have to learn how all this (backstage) stuff works,” he said. “At first I was really nervous and went a little overboard, taking notes about everything.”
Both of the Hall children are looking forward to spending more time in PMT productions.
“Everyone is very nice and welcoming, and the teachers are really good at what they do,” Camryn said.
Her brother agreed.
“You get there, and you make friends immediately, he said.
