Rotary clubs across the world have taken part in an "End Plastic Soup" initiative, aimed at reducing the amount of plastic in the ocean. Part of that includes collecting and recycling plastic into usable composite park benches. The Murrysville-Export Rotary Club donated one such bench on Aug. 11, 2023. It was installed along Kennedy Avenue near Giuseppe’s Pizza.

Thanks to a bunch of shrink wrap and grocery bags, Export has a new bench near Giuseppe’s Pizzeria on Kennedy Avenue.

It was created through the use of local recycled plastics, part of Rotary International’s “End Plastic Soup” initiative, which aims to keep plastic out of the world’s oceans. The Murrysville-Rotary Club donated the bench and officially installed it on Aug. 11.

“Rotary International is committed to promoting a cleaner global environment and this is just one of the areas that we focus on,” said Rotary member Gene Ciafre whose company, General Products & Supply in Export, donated shrink wrap that was recycled into part of the bench.

“Aldo Napoleone of Aldo Foodservice (in Aliquippa) was also a major contributor of the shrink wrap,” Ciafre said. “In addition to shrink wrap, we also accept any type of plastic that expands, like shopping bags. Our club has an ongoing program to collect it via our members, and convert it into these benches.”

Plastic donations of shrink wrap, grocery bags or the type of flexible plastic that groceries like bread come wrapped in can be donated at Pro Trucks & Cars, 4166 William Penn Highway in Murrysville.
