Homestead historically is noted for two things: the Homestead Strike of 1892, and the extraordinarily talented Homestead Grays baseball team of Negro League fame.

And, perhaps, more recently for the Waterfront shopping mall.

Now, a nonprofit organization called Doors Open Pittsburgh, dedicated to building appreciation of the area’s architectural history, is inviting people to take a fresh look at Homestead.

On Saturday, the group is leading a self-guided walking tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that includes 20 building tour stops with behind-the-scenes access, guided tours and beer and wine tastings.

According to Doors Open Pittsburgh, the event is open-house style, meaning visitors can create their own tour route and pace.

“Getting to know Homestead was an incredible surprise — so much vibrancy and change,” said Bonnie Baxter, Doors Open executive director. “I am tickled over the people I have met. They love their neighborhood and genuinely want to share it with others. The sense of community is organic and authentic. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

Among the tour stops are several historic churches, reimagined work and living spaces and tours of Millie’s Ice Cream Factory.

There will be free metered and surface lot parking for the day. Also, a free shuttle bus will run continuously starting at 10:15 a.m.

“Our town is open, and we really want people to visit and see for themselves all Homestead has to offer,” said Mayor Betty Esper.
