Students have until the end of March to submit applications for multiple scholarship opportunities through the North Allegheny Foundation.

All applications must be completed by 11:59 p.m. March 29 and can be accessed through the www.northallegheny.org/nafoundation.

Out of the 14 opportunities listed, the North Allegheny Foundation funds five $1,000 scholarships, including Excellence in Academics, Excellence in Arts, Excellence in Leadership, Excellence in Service, and Extra Effort, according to Bill Mascari, Spanish teacher at Marshall Middle School, who is secretary to the foundation.

Other scholarships are funded by outside sources, including the family of late staff members and students, as well as alumni. Those include the Frank J. Farina Jr. Award for Musical Excellence, Joseph Wissinger Memorial Scholarship, Sally Duffett Scholarship, NA/Westminster Scholarship Fund, Laura Sosovicka Memorial Scholarship, Robert H. Watford Scholarship, William Rothenbach Scholarship and Nathan Trappazano Scholarship.

New this year is a $500 scholarship created in memory of former district teacher Marilyn Moellenbrock Sproule, said Mascari. Sproule was a McCandless resident who died at age 69 in 2021, according to an online obituary. The scholarship, funded by Marilyn’s family, is for a female student who intends to pursue college studies in business/finance or medical care.

The scholarship opportunities have been a long-standing tradition with the North Allegheny Foundation.

“The mission of the NA Foundation is to enhance and enrich the educational experience at North Allegheny. Since 1989, the NA Foundation has distributed over $750,000 in grants to NA schools and thousands more in scholarships to outstanding graduating seniors,” Mascari said.

Winners will be announced in early May. All scholarship recipients are invited to attend the May 22 North Allegheny School Board meeting for a special recognition ceremony, Mascari said.

For more information, the foundation’s website or email naofundation@northallegheny.org.

The foundation’s next fundraising event will be an updated Taste of NA dinner at Soergel’s in late May.

The North Allegheny Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization that provides fundraising for the district including grants to North Allegheny teachers and schools, and student scholarships, among other initiatives, according to the foundation’s site.
