North Allegheny School District celebrates graduation of 673 students

They did it.

The Class of 2025, the 69th graduating class of North Allegheny School District, was celebrated the morning of June 7, after the event was postponed from the previous night due to inclement weather.

The stadium was packed with friends and families of the 673 graduates.

After an introduction by high school Principal Matthew Buchak, student class President Julia O’Keefe addressed the audience, offering appreciation to parents, families, faculty and the administration for their support. She especially thanked her classmates.

“It is hard to believe that this group, my friends that I spent over a decade with, are heading in a new direction. For the first time in our lives, we won’t be walking into a North Allegheny building with familiar faces all around us. The lessons we have learned, the memories we have made and the connections we have formed will carry us forward,” she said.

In preparation for graduation, about 30 seniors auditioned before a panel of teachers to present a speech. This year, the panel selected three additional speakers, in addition to the class president. This included Andrew Li, Yuki Qian and Charles Alan Potter.

Dr. Brendan Hyland, superintendent of the North Allegheny School District, also spoke, recognizing that the ceremony fell near the historic D-Day, the World War II battle that fell on June 6, 1944.

With that, he lauded the graduates who are planning to serve in the military, including the Air Force Academy, Air Force Reserves, Navy, Marines, Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at various universities and colleges across the country.

Veterans at the ceremony also were acknowledged and thanked for their service.

North Allegheny High School Principal Matthew Buchak remarked on the generosity, positive attitude and diligent work ethic of the Class of 2025.

“The philanthropy demonstrated by this class is inspiring. Their leadership has raised close to $100,000 in donations for local charities. Their ability to encourage and uplift each other has helped this group remain resilient. This class has excelled, receiving numerous accolades across academic, music, arts, clubs, activities and athletics endeavors,” Buchak said.

Hyland and Buchak officially graduated the class of students.

“The world doesn’t need just your intelligence or your ambition, it needs your kindness, your ability to listen, to understand and to see things from someone else’s point of view. Class of 2025, you got this,” Hyland said.

Seniors enjoyed a variety of notable events as their final year came to a close, including senior prom on May 3 and a senior banquet on The Gateway Clipper on May 30. Seniors also participated in the “Walk Back in Time” to each of their respective elementary schools on June 5.

As far as plans after high school, 86% of the graduates are set to attend a four-year college for a bachelor’s degree, 2.9% plan to follow an associate degree path, 3% will use the next year as a gap or service year, 3% are entering employment and 1% are joining the military.

The top five colleges and universities for the 2025 graduates are the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State University, Slippery Rock University, Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, according to a list from the high school counseling department.

Among the students who responded to the high school survey, at least one is studying in another country at McGill University in Montreal. Another graduate is heading to India for the summer for a research project as the result of winning the World Food Prize, according to Buchak.
