Friendship and food are the key ingredients to the third annual North Hills Community Outreach neighborly barbecue set from noon to 2 p.m. April 12 at Memorial Park Church in McCandless.
The Community BBQ fundraiser benefits the nonprofit outreach, which addresses the needs of people in crisis, hardship and poverty in northern Allegheny County.
“Food brings people to the table, especially delicious food. We wanted to throw an event that’s affordable and open to everyone,” said Jeff Geissler, spokesperson for the outreach.
Tickets are $15 and $8 for children 4 to 10. Children 3 and younger are admitted free. To purchase tickets, visit nhco.org/bbq.
Guests can enjoy a menu of pulled pork, ribs, brisket, chicken, grilled vegetables, macaroni and cheese, and pork and beans.
This backyard-style barbecue is being sponsored by Wheelfish, a restaurant in Ross.
“It’s not just a fundraiser — it’s a friend-raiser. It’s a great way for neighbors, community members and event sponsors to meet up, eat delicious food and learn more about NHCO,” Geissler said.
Those feeling the true community spirit can donate a ticket to be offered to a family or individual who uses the outreach’s services, he said.
Hampton Mechanical is the smoke sponsor, and Resnick Roofing and Wheelfish are the hickory sponsors, according to NHCO’s website.
The scene will be complemented with music and a bounce house for kids.
“It’s very light, fun and family-friendly — similar to a neighborhood block party,” Geissler said.
Memorial Park Church is located not far from North Hills Community Outreach’s Hampton office and has been a big supporter for many years. A dozen or more volunteers from the church help at the event, Geissler said.
NHCO also has a location at the Millvale Community Center and Greenstone Methodist Church in Avalon.
The McCandless church is happy to provide the space and connect with the people at the barbecue.
“We’re grateful for the way NHCO cares for people in our community, and we’re honored to support that work. At Memorial Park Church, our mission is simple: Love people. Know Jesus. Live transformed. Supporting our community and our most vulnerable neighbors is a meaningful way we get to live out that mission,” said Greg Hollack, communications director for the church.
