At the library: Here are some upcoming programs at Northland Public Library
Library to host 1st speed puzzle contest
Northland Public Library is hosting its first speed puzzling event for adults from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 23.
Participants can test their puzzle skills by competing on their own in the 300-piece puzzle competition or as a team of two in the 500-piece competition.
Prizes will be awarded to the first- and second-place winners in each competition.
Registration is required. Participants must register at the Ask a Librarian desk on the upper level.
The cost is $5 for the solo competition and $10 for the team competition. All proceeds benefit the library.
New Fandom Fun program open to teens
Northland Public Library is offering a new program for youths 12 to 18.
Fandom Fun meets from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting will be Nov. 13.
Each meetup will include an activity related to one of their favorite fandoms. November’s theme is Nintendo.
Mark your calendars: The Dec. 11 theme will be “Stranger Things.”
No registration is required.
Notice to patrons
The library will be closed on Friday, Nov. 7, for a staff development day.
The library also will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, and will remain closed through Sunday, Nov. 30, for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Northland’s regular operating hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Halloween events scheduled for adults
Adults 21 and older are invited to get in the Halloween spirit from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Northland Public Library.
There will be spooky games, a terrifying escape room and creepy crafts.
Attendees are encouraged to dress up and enter the costume contest and trick or treat for some prizes.
Snacks will be provided.
The library also is planning a Northland Radio Hour: Spooky Stories event for adults from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the library or virtually via Zoom.
Staff and friends of the library will share scary tales and local legends.

Programs for adults
• Orange Juice on Cereal: When Your Personal and Professional Lives Don’t Pair Well: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27
Join psychologist and life-career coach Dr. Susan Jarquin from Centered Lily LLC as she discusses how to create balance for professional women with ambitious career goals who are displeased with the existing division of labor in their households.. Registration is required.
• Cookbook Club: 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 3
Home cooks of all skill levels are welcome as we explore dishes from various cookbooks. Each month has a theme, and participants can make a dish to bring and share with the club while we discuss the recipes and cooking process. November’s theme is Thanksgiving Trial Run. • The Medal of Honor: 11 a.m. to noon Nov. 8
Celebrate Veterans Day with stories of local heroes. The Medal of Honor is the United States’ highest award for military valor in action. Jerry Fitzgibbon will share the history of the Medal of Honor and the contribution of its recipients from Western Pennsylvania who fought so valiantly for our country. Registration is required.
• Investing in Retirement: How to Not Outlive Your Money: 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 13
Approaching retirement or already retired? Are you concerned you will outlive your money? Are you worried about the high costs of health care and rising inflation? You are not alone. Join agents from Bankers Life Securities as they discuss ways you can manage the financial transition into retirement and plan for the long haul. Registration is required.
• Movie Matinee: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 19
Join us for a showing of “Penguin Lessons,” a PG-13 comedy/drama from 2024 that’s based on a true story. This uplifting film features a disillusioned Englishman, named Tom Michell, who goes to work in Argentina in 1978. Expecting an easy ride, he discovers the country in political turmoil and his students are unteachable. However, when he rescues a penguin from an oil slick beach, his life changes. You might think Steve Coogan and Jonathan Pryce are the stars, but it’s the penguin. No registration is required. Mark your calendars: The Dec. 17 matinee will explore Qatar and Lake Tahoe, offering a peek at the city on the Arabian Peninsula and the popular tourist attraction in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
• Board Game Night: Learn to Play Ticket to Ride: 6:30 to 9 p.m. Nov. 21
Learn how to play Ticket to Ride, the popular train adventure game. Already know how to play? Then try one of the variations, such as Ticket to Ride New York or London. Registration is required.
Programs for young people
• Teen Writing Group: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and Dec. 3
Teens 13 to 18 who enjoy creative writing are invited to meet other students with similar interests the first Wednesday of every month. There will be writing games, group writing exercises and interesting prompts. Bring your notebook or laptop: There will be plenty of unstructured time to start a new project or continue working on an old one, as well as opportunities to share your work if you wish. • Middle School Writing Group: 4 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and Dec. 3

• Teen Time: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. first Thursday of each month, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4
Teens 12 to 18 can stop by for a mystery activity. No registration is required. Note: If no more than one participant is in the room at 15 minutes past the program start time, the program will be canceled.
• Animal Crossing Club: 4 to 5 p.m. third Tuesday of each month, Nov. 18 and Dec. 16
Good afternoon, Mayor! Villagers ages 10 to 16 are welcome to join in the collaboratively building of Northland’s island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Switch. Participants can bring their own Switches to show off their own islands, but no experience with the game is necessary to participate. No registration is required.
• Crafting With Ms. Kim: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays through Dec. 18
Children 3 and older are welcome to drop by any time to create a 15-minute craft. Registration is required. Note: There will be no session on Nov. 27 because the library will be closed for Thanksgiving.
• Lab Mice Storytime: 1 to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 27 and Nov. 3
Children 3 to 6 can join us on a series of Mondays for a STEAM-based, hands-on storytime. Each week, we will read a story, talk about what happened and do a STEAM activity related to the book. Registration is now open and required for the first session only; by registering for the first session, you also will be registering for future sessions.
