Letter to the editor: Community violence affects us all; fund intervention efforts now

The tragic shooting in Pitcairn on June 26 — where two 16-year-olds were killed — is yet another heartbreaking reminder that gun violence is devastating families in our region.

Community violence intervention (CVI) groups are working every day in neighborhoods across Allegheny County to prevent these tragedies through mentorship, mediation and healing.

But every day, the Pennsylvania Senate fails to act risks the violence prevention infrastructure that has been built over the past four years.

Even if you live in a quieter suburb, this work matters. Safer cities mean a stronger region. When one community suffers, we all feel it — economically, emotionally and morally. We must care as deeply as those living with daily fear.

Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman must pass the House-approved budget and fully fund CVI. Lives are on the line.
