A man was hit by a vehicle Monday night while trying to cross a section of McKnight Road in Ross where there is no crosswalk, according to police.

The incident occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. when the man tried to reach the Exxon gas station near the InTown Suites motel by hopping over a jersey barrier into the northbound lanes, said police Det. Brian Kohlhepp.

As the man began walking across the lanes, he turned back after seeing an approaching vehicle, which swerved to avoid a collision, Kohlhepp said.

The victim, who is from the Edgewood/Swissvale area, was struck with the front of the vehicle and suffered right leg, head and internal injuries. His name was not released.

He was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in the North Side and was still in the trauma unit as of this morning, Kohlhepp said.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police, who are not expected to file criminal charges.
