North Allegheny cancels 'in-person' commencement

A recent order from the Allegheny County Health Department limiting public gatherings to no more than 50 people to address a spike in covid-19 cases prompted the North Allegheny School District to cancel the in-person graduation ceremony planned at Newman Stadium on July 17.

In response to a new order from Allegheny County that restricts outdoor events and gatherings to no more than 50 people, the North Allegheny School District is canceling Friday’s “in-person” graduation ceremony at Newman Stadium, school officials announced.

“We understand the disappointment that comes with this news,” district officials said. “This decision was not made lightly. We continue to focus on the health and safety of our students, staff and families. With that in mind, and with the new Allegheny County order, we arrived at this decision.”

The county’s July 8 order, which runs through July 24, also tightens restrictions on bar and restaurant service to help slow the recent surge in covid-19 cases.

As an alternative to the in-person commencement, the district has invited graduates to sign up to receive their diplomas at Newman Stadium today and Friday.

Students are encouraged to wear their caps and gowns and can bring up to four guests. A professional photographer will take photos of students receiving their diplomas.
