North Hills gardening enthusiasts making it easy to get growing this spring

Gardeners itching to get out and start beautifying their landscapes and grow fresh produce can pick up a wide variety of flowers and plants at a number of upcoming events in the North Hills:

NHCO community garden

Volunteers interested in growing produce that will be distributed to needy families in the North Hills through the North Hills Community Outreach’s garden in Bellevue can help out between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.

NHCO’s Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Memorial Garden last year grew 5,000 pounds of organic produce for the non-profit organization’s three food banks.

Volunteers can also bring children to participate but they must be supervised at all times. Gardeners also should not wear open-toed shoes when they are working.

North Area Environmental Council

Gardeners can get the seedlings they need to beautify their landscapes while helping out a local organization devoted to environmental awareness and stewardship.

The North Area Environmental Council, which is marking its 50th year, is now taking orders for its annual seedling sale.

An array of seedlings are available to grow trees, shrubs and wildflowers that are native to Pennsylvania or are non-invasive. Prices start at $4.

Orders must be placed and paid for by April 5.

Seed orders will be available for pickup at the Latodomi Nature Center in North Park between 9 a.m. and noon April 27. The nature center is located at 575 Brown Road.

The seedling catalog and order form are available online.

Greybrooke Garden Club

The Greybrooke Garden Club is holding its annual plant sale 9 a.m. to noon May 11 at the McCandless Crossing shopping center on McKnight Road.

The sale will feature hanging baskets, herbs, garden décor and tools, a variety of decorative pots and containers and potted plants.

The event will feature a Children’s Corner. Proceeds support the club’s annual donations to conservancy groups and worthy community organizations.

Ingomar Garden Club

The Ingomar Garden Club is hosting its annual spring plant sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 11.

The sale will feature a wide variety of hanging baskets, perennials, annuals, vegetables and crafts.

The event will be held at the intersection of Route 19 and Ingomar Road in McCandless.

Longvue Acres Garden Club

The Longvue Acres Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon May 18 at Northmont United Presbyterian Church, 8169 Perry Highway, McCandless.

The sale will feature more than 500 perennials grown in members’ gardens and donated for the sale.

Proceeds from the sale help fund monthly educational programs and a variety of charitable gardening, horticultural, and conservation groups.

The club is hosting a free program titled “All about the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy” at 7:30 p.m. May 28.

The free program at Northmont Presbyterian will feature a slide show about the various ways the Conservancy serves Western Pennsylvania as well as information on the 132 community gardens it maintains.
