2 injured, 5 cars struck after shooting along McKnight Road in Ross

One motorist was hospitalized and another injured after a shooting Thursday afternoon caused a two-hour closure of McKnight Road in Ross.

Ross Detective Sgt. Brian Kohlhepp initially said there was an exchange of gunfire just after 2 p.m. along the busy North Hills corridor McKnight Road, near the intersection with Nelson Run Road. Later Thursday evening, he released a statement indicating police now believe there was only one shooter.

Kohlhepp said bullets struck a total of five cars. One shot hit a vehicle before its driver pulled into the Network Access parking lot. A person in another vehicle was shot and drove to The Exchange store.

One motorist was taken to an area hospital in stable condition with “non-life-threatening injuries,” Kohlhepp said.

Another person was injured by broken glass when part or all of their car’s windshield shattered, he said.

It was unclear Thursday if the shooter was stationary or traveling in a vehicle on McKnight Road, Kohlhepp said.

The northbound lanes of McKnight Road at Nelson Run Road were closed until about 4:40 p.m., causing gridlock and delays on several neighboring residential streets.

Nobody was in custody Thursday evening.

Kohlhepp said Ross police had heard about a separate shooting incident in Pittsburgh’s nearby North Side.

“There are some indicators that this may be related to the shooting in the City of Pittsburgh which occurred prior to these shootings,” he said. “This is something that we are continuing to investigate.”

A Pittsburgh public safety spokesperson did not respond Thursday to phone calls or emails seeking comment.
