Part of Thompson Run Road in Ross Township will close on Tuesday for at least two weeks for repairs to a bridge that was damaged during storms last month, the Allegheny County Department of public Works announced.
The southbound lane of Thompson Run between Radcliff Drive and Babcock Boulevard was shut down June 7 after the annual inspection for Thompson Run Bridge No. 3 discovered that a section of stone abutment had washed away due to recent storms.
Damage to the abutment created the potential for the bridge’s southbound lane to become structurally deficient, according to county officials.
Stop signs were placed along the road to control traffic, which required motorists to take turns crossing the bridge.
Plans call for repairing the bridge abutment with reinforced concrete and diverting the stream to reduce the chances for damage from storms in the future.
Traffic near the construction site will follow a detour along Siebert Road to McKnight Road to Babcock Boulevard.
