Students at North Hills’ Highcliff Elementary in Ross stumbled upon a time capsule in their school, a decade after it was planned to be opened.
The capsule, created by students and staff in 1990, was found while the stage was being prepared for the Drama Club’s production of “Cinderella … If the Shoe Fits.”
According to the district, the capsule was meant to be opened after 25 years — in 2015. Student Council members opened it Nov. 5.
Each grade at the school had contributed to the time capsule:
• Kindergarten: Booklets about Nintendo and hockey.
• First grade: Favorite television shows and characters, including Bart Simpson.
• Second grade: Writings on popular music, focusing on New Kids on the Block, including trading cards.
• Third grade: A VHS tape showing students tie-dying shirts.
• Fourth grade: Photos of Highcliff classrooms.
• Fifth grade: Coins, anticipating changes in coin designs.
• Sixth grade: Portraits showcasing 1990s fashion.
Fifth grader Kevin Blackmon discovered his mom, Meghan Labiaux, was in second grade at Highcliff when the capsule was sealed. She had helped write a paragraph about New Kids on the Block.
Kevin was able to FaceTime with his mom while reading it.
“I’m sure she never imagined that her fifth-grade son would be reading her words 35 years later,” said Sasha Pesanka, Kevin’s teacher.
The capsule was passed from class to class for students to view it.
