Norwin area Democrats volunteer
Members of the Norwin Area Democrats donated food and clothing to shelters and organizations that help the needy in the community during the National Day of Service on Jan. 18.
Donations were made by both individual members of the committee and by the Norwin Area Democrats as a group.
Among the groups to benefit from the initiative were the McKeesport YMCA Winter Transitional Shelter, the Welcome Home Shelter in Greensburg, the Union Mission Shelter, the Blackburn Center in Greensburg and Feeding the Spirit.
The committee members donated gift bags for local Meals on Wheels recipients, each including a box of tissue, small bottles of hand sanitizers and a face covering with a note wishing them a safe and healthy 2021.
New and gently used gloves, hats, scarves, socks, coats and blankets were donated to shelters.
Irwin police officers sworn in, more sought
Irwin Mayor William Hawley recently swore onto duty three police officers for the borough at a recent council meeting.
Justin Hott and Cody Stanoszek were sworn in at council’s Jan. 13 meeting as full-time police officers and Eric Williams was sworn in as a part-time officer. A fourth officer, Andrew Carter, who will work part-time, had previously been sworn in, Hawley said.
Irwin also advertised for candidates to take a civil service examination on March 21 to create an eligibility list for full-time police officer position.
Hiring another full-time police officer will give the department more flexibility in scheduling, said Chief Dan Wenel.
Applications are available at Irwin borough manager’s office, 424 Main St., and the completed application must be delivered in person to that office by 4 p.m. Feb. 12.
Westmoreland creates website for vaccine info
Westmoreland County has created a page on its website with a list of vaccine providers, how to contact them and a link to the state health department’s interactive map of vaccine providers. Information on how to register for the covid vaccine and a quiz to determine when a person is eligible to get one can be found on the county’s website, www.co.westmoreland.pa.us.
Residents need to contact the vaccine provider to schedule an appointment. Supplies of the vaccine are limited, the county said. The web page also has information on the state’s four phases of distribution. Information on the authorized vaccines and potential side effects can be found. The web page will update information on vaccination groups, vaccination schedules and locations and answers to frequently asked questions. The county web page has a link to opt in to get email or receive text alerts as more vaccine-related information is available.
