Church marks 150 years in Irwin

Immanuel Lutheran Church, 612 Chestnut St., Irwin, will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Sept. 11 with a special service at 11:15 a.m. presided over by Bishop Kurt F. Kusserow of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

The church was founded in 1872 by Swedish settlers and was initially was known as the Swedish Evangelical Westby Church because most of the congregants came from the Westby Parish in Sweden. In 1875, the congregation paid $400 for the land where the church now stands. Men built the wood church after their day of working in nearby mines.

Andrew Carnegie provided the church with a $500 grant for a pipe organ, with the provision that the congregation raise a similar amount. The pipe organ became an integral part of the worship life at the church in 1904. The congregation became more oriented to the United States and dropped the Westby name, and replacing it with Immanuel.

The church is a member of the Pittsburgh Lutheran United Ministries, which is a cooperative ministry comprised of 10 Evangelical Lutheran Church of America congregations in the Pittsburgh area.

Refreshments will be served prior to the service.
