Norwin library to feature author on women in WW II
The Norwin Public Library is sponsoring a virtual program at 6 p.m. March 22 about women who were involved in the military during World War II.
Author Kayleen Reusser, who has interviewed about 250 men and women while writing seven books about the war, will lead the discussion for individuals age 10 and older.
Those interested in participating in the program can register by sending an email to Barbara McKee, children’s librarian, at bmckee@norwinpubliclibrary.net, or call 724-863-4700, ext. 6.
The program is being held in conjunction with Women’s History Month, McKee said.
Irwin hires part-time officer
Irwin has hired a part-time police officer with experience working in Swissvale and Lincoln Borough.
Daniel Morrow of Monroeville was hired by borough council on March 10 at a rate of $22.88 per hour in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement with the police officers and will receive benefits for the part-time officers.
Chief Dan Wensel said Morrow, a former member of the military, “is very professional.” He is a candidate for a full-time officer’s job in the borough, Wensel said.
Norwin athletic groups to play at Irwin Park
The Norwin Community Athletic Association and the Police Athletic League of North Huntingdon Township were granted use of the Irwin Park baseball field.
Irwin Council on March 10 approved agreements with the two athletic organizations.
Councilman Mike Yunn, who heads the borough’s recreation committee, favored giving the Norwin athletic association use of the field four days per week because the athletic league promised to maintain it . The borough does not have he manpower, Yunn said.
The police league was granted use of the field for two days per week.
Norwin Senior Softball group to hold registration
The Norwin Senior Softball Association will hold signups from 9-11 a.m. March 24 and 31 at the PAL Complex in Shafton.
The league is for men and women ages 55 and older. The cost is $15.

West Newton library accepting donations
The West Newton Public Library at 124 N. Water St., is accepting donations of hardcover, paperback and children’s books as well as DVDs.
The library is open from noon to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays; noon to 7 p.m. Wednesdays; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
