Cheerleaders with Norwin Youth Football make their way down Main Street for the Light Up Norwin holiday parade in 2023 in downtown Irwin.

Irwin sets holiday parade, free parking

The annual Light Up Norwin event will usher in the holiday season with a parade and entertainment on Nov. 20 along Main Street in Irwin.

Festivities begin at 5 p.m. with the East End Kids, followed by Main Street Music students at 5:30 p.m. and C.P. Music at 6 p.m.

The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. along Main Street. WQED-TV personality Rick Sebak, known for his Pittsburgh-area documentaries, will serve as master of ceremonies. Following the parade, Santa Claus will greet attendees at the S&T Bank parking lot on Main Street.

Free shuttle service will be provided from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. from the parking lot of Calvary Assembly of God Church, 8653 Pennsylvania Ave., North Huntingdon.

In addition, Irwin Borough will offer holiday shoppers free parking from Nov. 24 through Jan. 2.

Irwin names code enforcement officer

Irwin council has promoted Stephanie Hughes to the nonunion code enforcement officer position, effective Nov. 13. Hughes was unanimously approved for the role.

She succeeds Matt Sever, who resigned Oct. 8. Hughes, who was previously the billing, lien and code enforcement assistant clerk, was hired by the borough in December 2022. She will be paid $23.20 an hour in her new role.

Police expected to get new guns

Irwin council is expected to approve a request for six duty weapons for the police department, ensuring officers will have new, standardized equipment.

The anticipated approval is for six duty weapons and two holsters from Witmer Public Safety Group Inc. of Coatesville for $6,074. Chief Dan Wensel told council the cost is discounted for police departments.

Chief Wensel proposed the purchase of six 9 mm Glock weapons, which include red-dot sights and a flashlight. Although the department has six officers, only two holsters are needed because four officers already own their own, Wensel said.

By purchasing the guns, the borough will own the equipment, which officers would leave with the department if they resigned. If approved, the new equipment could be delivered within about six weeks, Wensel noted.
