Irwin Borough council member resigns

For the second time this year, Irwin Borough Council will be looking for someone to replace a council member who is resigning.

Councilwoman Leslie Savage resigned from borough council, effective Dec. 14. Savage said she was resigning for personal reasons.

Savage was in the midst of her second term, which would have expired at the end of 2025.

“It’s been an honor to serve the borough. It’s been a lot of fun … at times very aggravating. I hope I made a contribution,” Savage said.

Council authorized advertising for candidates to be appointed to council for the remainder of Savage’s term.

Borough council is not scheduled to meet again until Jan. 2.

Councilman Nick Powanda, who won election to council in November, was appointed in September to fill the remainder of Mike Yunn’s term, which expires at the end of the year.

Irwin seeks to add candidates for police job

Irwin Borough’s Civil Service Commission has been directed to create a list of potential candidates for a job as a patrolman.

Borough council on Dec. 13 authorized the Civil Service Commission to create that list. Anyone interested in being placed on the Civil Service list must pay a $50 application fee.

Borough appoints commission members, zoning board

The Irwin Civics Commission is now an official borough commission.

Borough council on Dec. 13 authorized an ordinance making the commission an official part of the borough. The commission will oversee concerts at the borough park.

To fill the commission, council appointed Joe Thomas and Brian Blackall to five-year terms, beginning Jan. 1, 2024.

John Slivka was appointed to the borough’s zoning hearing board, effective Jan. 1. He will replace Debbie Kelly, whose resignation is effective at the end of the year.
