Irwin seeks money for sign improvements, paving
Irwin Borough’s informational sign along Pennsylvania Avenue near the Irwin Park entrance is being targeted for improvements, funded by the borough’s anticipated allocation from its 2024 Community Development Block Grant.
Council could earmark $122,500 to upgrade the sign so that it can display electronic messages, to improve the facade and refresh the landscaping.
They also may spend about $137,740 to pave all of Sweden Alley.
Car cruise set at West Hempfield
A car cruise and open house will be held at the West Hempfield Presbyterian Church, 8 West Hempfield Drive, Hempfield, to celebrate the church’s 60th anniversary from noon to 4 p.m. July 29.
Proceeds from the event will support West Hempfield Presbyterian Church building maintenance fund and the Food2Go4Kids program at West Hempfield Elementary School. The Food2Go4Kids program provides qualifying students with easily prepared meals and snacks to take home over the weekend during the school year.
Book signing party slated
An Irwin author who has written a book about a serial killer will hold a signing party for his book, “Little Boy Blue,” from 6 to 8 p.m. July 27 at Sienna at Norwin, 10640 Route 30, North Huntingdon.
Dan Rose of Irwin, a former police officer in Ocean City, Md., said he wrote the 360-page fictional book in 2008 based on the actions of real-life serial killers such as the late Ted Bundy, then tweaked it and updated it in 2022. Rose said he made the book as realistic as possible through the story of the fictional serial killer from birth to his capture.
Church to distribute school supplies
Students in need will have a chance to get a free bookbag and various school supplies and scissors during a backpack giveaway event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Grace Collective Church at 275 Brush Creek Road, North Huntingdon.
Organizers of the event have worked with local businesses and community members to assemble supplies tailored to different age groups.
Children must pre-register in order to attend the backpack giveaway, All students attending the event will have the chance to pick their own backpacks and fill them with age-appropriate supplies. Among the items available is markers, crayons, pencil boxes, pencil bags, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, glue, notebooks, folders, scissors, index cards, pencils, rulers, highlighters and hygiene products.
Students also will be able to get a free haircut, as well.
To participate, individuals must register early at gracecollectivechurch.com. By registering before July 30, attendees will be entered into a drawing for amusement park tickets.
