Irwin to celebrate county’s 250th anniversary

Even though Irwin was not founded until 1864, some 100 years after the creation of Westmoreland County, a celebration of the 250th anniversary of Westmoreland’s founding is planned for 6 to 11 p.m. Feb. 23 at Brandy’s tavern at 200 Main St..

There will be complimentary appetizers and a birthday cake. Those attending will pay for their own food beer and other drinks. An open microphone stage in the basement will start at 8 p.m.

George Washington, portrayed by Gary Ed of Irwin, will be on hand for the celebration. The Washington re-enactor will be doing something that the real George Washington probably never did - appear in Irwin. There is no historic records that Washington traveled through present-day Irwin on his way to Fort Duquesne in 1753, or with Gen. Braddock’s ill-fated campaign in July 1755 that ended in defeat at the Battle of Monongahela or the successful campaign in 1758 to get the French to abandon Fort Duquesne.

Those attending the event will receive a wooden tooth, in recognition of Washington’s wooden dentures.

The event is sponsored by the non-profits Norwin Chamber of Commerce, Come Talk, Inc. of Irwin, the Irwin Business and Professional Association and Fight the Blight.

Adult prom set for West Newton

For those who want to relive their high school prom or for those who never went, an adult prom is planned for Feb. 25 at the West Newton gymnasium on Vine Street.

The doors will open at 4 p.m. with a grand march slated for 5 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and entertainment provided by the Pittsburgh Belairs will begin at 7 p.m.

The adult prom will be catered by the Trail Side restaurant in West Newton.

Tickets to the event are $45 each and it will be limited to 100 people. At least 75 tickets must be sold or the event may be cancelled, according to the sponsor, Community Revitalization of West Newton.

Tickets are available through the Community Revitalization website at www.facebook.com/crownofwestnewton/.

The proceeds from the event will benefit renovations to the former West Newton High School gymnasium.

Members of planning commission, sewage authority appointed

North Huntingdon officials reappointed members to the township’s planning commission and sewage authority.

The township commissioners this month reappointed Virginia Stump, who also is township commissioner, and James Flynn, to four-year terms on the planning commission.

Charles Gilbert was reappointed to a five-year term on the North Huntingdon Township Municipal Authority, which operates a sewage system in parts of the township.

Robert Regola was appointed to a five-year term on the Western Westmoreland Municipal Authority, which operates a sewage system in parts of the township.

Bozana Murray was appointed to a five-year term on the recreation advisory board.

The commissioners also announced the board is accepting letters of interest from those who want to serve on the township zoning board.

The township also is accepting letters of interest from those who want to serve a five-year term on the Educational Service Agency, which directs the operations of the school crossing guards.
